Another roundabout question: Deane Roundabout, Galway

All the roundabout threads I've seen recently prompted me to ask about Deane Roundabout in Galway. I've been meaning to post about this for a while.

So, first look at the attachment at the bottom of the post. Let's say I'm approaching from "Entry", marked on the attachment. I want to take "Exit 3". What lane should I be in? In my opinion, the exit is past 180degrees, so I should be in the right lane.

What confuses me is the sign before the roundabout:
http://bit.ly/1eBIgQF (Google Maps Street View link of the sign)
According to the sign, the exit is at 180degrees. Going by it, I should be in the left lane.

I drive through this roundabout most days, and I see cars in both the left and right lane, taking the 3rd exit.

Thoughts? What is the correct lane to be in, or is it entirely down to one's opinion?

Always use the right lane myself when using it. I could understand people not being used to the area using the left lane in error but it's always left lane before 12, right lane after 12 for me.

If unfamiliar with it and going by the sign you'd tend to be in the left hand lane I think, it's a very misleading sign since it's missing an exit.
But really you should be in the right hand lane

By any standard of teaching (clockface or counting exits) you would need to be in the right hand lane, as the exit is after the 2nd exit and after 12oc on the clock face (I really hate that clock face nonsense...). Unless signage states otherwise, you should be in the right lane.

That sign that you have posted in the first link is irrelevant btw as it bears no resemblence to the actual layout of the roundabout. If that is the sign that is showing on the approach to the roundabout then its no wonder people have such a difficulty there.

i was only there a few weeks ago..and approached in the left lane of that roundabout...realised how messy it was as i came around and spotted that unexpected exit 2!

Nice to see that roundabout from the air.... Never noticed the star shape before :)
I have been around that roundabout many times heading into town or back out to Connemara. I tend to use the left lane myself and have had no issues. Will probably have a rake of replies now telling me I am wrong or posting links to the rules of the road but I have yet to see someone use the right hand lane there coming from your "Entry" and leaving at exit 3 (Westside).
It is a bit of a strange roundabout anyways and I'm surprised it has not been removed like many of the major ones in Galway considering the next bit of road was only done up recently enough.

I can assure you that the sign I posted precedes this roundabout. Thanks for the input.

Me neither - gonna look out for the star-shape next time I'm driving through it. I'm shocked that you've never seen anyone take the right lane - I reckon about half of people will occupy each lane.

It might be removed, yet. Then again, it isn't the busiest of roundabouts so they mightn't bother.
