There's a few probably not as many as other cities, one on khao San road as far as I remember.tips : make sure you agree a price with a taxi driver before you get in at the airport their notorious for trying to rip you off, stick to your guns and they'll come back over and agree eventually.I'm hoping to head back over next year, you'll have a blast

Thank you for the reply, I will do my best to haggle with the taxi men :) is it better to book hotels before I go or just arrive in Bangkok and pick a hotel that looks good :)

I just arrived mind you I wasn't staying in hotels was more renting a room or a room in a guest house on khao San road far cheaper and right in backpacker central

My advice would be to NEVER haggle with a Thai taxi driver
Insist he turns on the meter and pay what ever the meter says... If he won't turn on the meter get into the next taxi...
The driver will never haggle to less than the meter price so the meter will always be cheapest!

Try O'Reilly's Irish Pub, 62 Silom Rd. It's a fair bit away from Khao San Road, but a fair few ex-pats seem to hang around there. It's not far from Pat Pong and whatever metro stop that is. I'd definitely have a hotel booked before I get there, if only for a few days so you can get yourself orientated.

What exactly are you planning on doing in Thailand for the summer? Are you working or just on a holiday? Bear in mind that things are much cheaper up north, but no matter where you are it's worth looking around a bit for the best deals. You never have to go far from tourist central to find someone doing meals/laundry/whatever cheaper.

    Hello,

If you ever need somwhere to stay (or something happens) I stayed in a hotel here: http://www.renohotel.co.th (right in Siem Square and MBK center) and they were really nice people. Bout e25 for night.

Bangkok tho for 2/3 months to live...I managed 4 days there as a tourist and did not like it (I think its a love it or hate it place). I think if we had moved out towards the suburbs for a bit of green. We did get to Kanchanaburi (and stayed in chalets down by the river quai and had a very, shall we say, nutty night!).

Yes, metered taxis in Bangkok are cheaper - with the pink interior (they run on some kind of gas cylinder rather than actual petrol).

As already mentioned, there is a big military presence in Bangkok at the mo, and you are advised to register with the Department of Foreign affairs if travelling there.

I've no idea why you want to travel halfway around the world to drink in Irish bars but there are a few, the one mentioned above on Soi 4 is called Hanrahans and does some very good food both Thai and European. Irish bars in Thailand aren't like in other countries, don't expect Irish people working there and only a few will drink there, they'll be overpriced too. Far better to try the open air beer bars, you'll meet people of all walks of life there and the beer is cheaper too especially if you stick to the local Chang or Singha beers.
