Hot air rises. So rad on landing will off set that.
Door would also help and draft profing escaping heat but be carefully as you also need ventilation to rooms, including upstairs ones.

yeah ventilation on the landing will be an issue as there is no windows there. I'll probably look into getting a door on the stairs had a curtain there before and even though it looked awful it seemed to help some what

I had a similar problem with open stairs up to my converted attic - all heat went straight up to the attic which I suspect isn't properly insulated (conversion done when I bought the house). Because of the layout, putting a door in wasn't really an option.

I stuck a curtain rail in the opening, and bought a good amount of thermal curtain lining and made a curtain out of it - it can easily be taken off in summer, and makes a fair difference (not perfect, but miles better than it was) in the winter when I have the heating on.

Cheap and cheerful but fairly effective. Maybe you could rig something up on your landing/stairs.

ETA - whoops, you beat me to it! Maybe get someone to make an attractive curtain double-lined with the thermal stuff?
