My policy says I can drive other cars apart from my own, but does it cover if a car has no tax and is not insured? Thanks

If your policy says you can drive it, it should also say if it needs to be taxed or insured.

    What insurer are you with?

Depends on the exact wording in your policy documents, some require the vehicle is insured others don't. But you still can't drive it as there's no tax, you need both to be legal.

He needs to check his policy. FWIW Im with Liberty and Im 99% sure that the other car doesnt need to be insured (this might not be the same in every policy though), but the car must be road legal, meaning tax and NCT.

Yeah my policy says it doesn't need to be insured. It has NCT so I guess he can try to tax it asap when he buys it.

    Thanks :)

It might be easier to get the seller to tax it before he buys it; at least that way you know its done and you dont have to wait to get the paperwork back.

I doubt the seller would, as she recently bought a new car. I assume her insurance has passed on to the new car so she can't get tax for the old one.

Why doesn't he just insure it himself? He'll need it if he's going to drive it in a public place anyway. He can have the policy become active at a prearranged time which coincides with him taking legal ownership. You don't need tax to insure the car (but you still need it to drive legally). If he's thinking of putting his car on his parents insurance beware that insurers are wise to this old trick.
