I recently moved, and there's already a Sky box here. Is it possible to subscribe and just get a card sent out, rather than having to get a new box?

Yes, what box is there now, basic Sky box or Sky+ box or Sky+ HD box?

Sky+ HD, so the same one you get on signing up anyway. Just getting a card sent out seems easier, if it's possible; wouldn't have to bother with installation etc.

You will also have to pair the card with the box, so be at your box when ringing sky as you will have to give them the box number from the settings menu.

Might be easier short-term, but what are you going to do if A, the box or LNB become faulty or B, the original owner drops by to retrieve his/her box?

Sky have a €100 call out charge and they'll only replace equipment they installed on your account, which is none in this case.

You should also note that getting a card is fine... but it may not activate in a box that has an active account associated with it, if the box has been idle for 3+months you'll probable be fine, any time-frame less could cause you problems.

My advise would be to get on to Sky's website and order a free installation asap, this time of year the industry is quite and you have an installation within 10-14days, that's guaranteed for 1 year, keep the second-hand box as a spare or for another room as a free-view box.

Not so worried about either of these; the dish is a shared one for the whole complex, and the previous tenant left the box with the landlord deliberately, apparently.

Ah, that's more of a worry; it only became inactive a few weeks ago. Thanks; hadn't realised that might be an issue.

I'm less worried about the timescale; I just don't really want to have to take a day off work to get this done, so thought getting a new card might be a sensible approach. So much for that :) Thanks for the advice.

Just ring sky and give them the box details, all may be completely legit and you just need the card

i presume one could also get a box off a sky agent and pick it up from them.also in a complex check with neighbours that dish has not been moved to another sat.
you do know how much you will be paying per month before you sign up?

EU legislation gives you a 2 year guarantee.

You cannot use an old sky box as a freeview box. Freeview is a UK terrestrial service only available through an aerial.
You might be able to use it for free to air satellite channels however.
