My brother is giving me his 04 tdi golf as he's getting a new car. The only problem is there's 200k miles on it. Now the car is in perfect working order and has been looked after. Could a well maintained tdi engine maybe do 250k miles??

Is it mk5 I assume a 1.9tdi engine. They will do seriously high mileage if minded 400k miles would be easily achievable. Mileage is kind of how long is a ball of string there is no reason why an engine won't keep going but the car will eventually become uneconomical to repair. I recently got a 07 mk 5 golf 1.9tdi there's 60k miles on it and it feels like a new car I love mine anyway and I had no particular love for vw before I got it.

That mk iv tdi engine is great and 250k miles is easily achievable but it comes down to how the car is minded

There are a few TDIs in the US with over 1 000 000 km on them. They'll last a very long time once you maintain them correctly.

Engine is not the problem, but you'd want to find out when clutch, brakes, shocks, exhaust, suspension and other sundry bits and pieces where done.

If you are getting it for free then what is there to lose?
