I am thinking of going to Berlin later this year with my teen aged son.
I have not been in Berlin before and I would like some advice about what area/ hotel to stay in. I am looking for some where near the tourist sites and near public transport.

Can you tell me what places, museums ect that are worth going to?
Has any one here done any of the city tours ect?
    Thanks for any advice given.

I was in Berlin in December 2012. It's my favourite city! We stayed in the NH Hotel in Mitte. I think it was Leipzigerstrasse. I would really recommend the hotel and the area as its close to Potsdamer Platz, a short walk to Brandenburg gate, Check Point Charlie etc.

We didn't do too many museums but we did go to the DDR museum and Topography of Terror and both were really interesting. I would really recommend doing the free walking tour with the New Berlin company. They are brilliant. I have since done tours with them in Munich and they are always amazing.

If you are into it I would really recommend registering to visit the Reichstag and do a tour. You have to book it online in advance. It was fantastic. You get a lovely view from the dome.

The Olympic stadium is well worth a visit too!

I've done this bike tour a couple of times and its a great way of seeing quite a bit of the city in one go.

I stayed in this apart hotel. Great if you're staying for more than a couple of nights - you get a separate bedroom and some cooking facilities.

Great spa hotel, near public transport and a strip of decent restaurants.

What kind of things are yourself and your son interested in? What month are you looking at?

If you are on a limited budget I would highly recomend the Easy Hotel http://www.easyhotel.com/.My wife and I stayed there the last time we were in Berlin and IRC it cost us E150 for 5 nights. Its very close to Alexanderplatz train station which is the station you will arrive at if you are flying with Ryanair Dublin to Schonefeld. It is literally a no frills hotel just a bed and bathroom. The Hotel is quite close to Museum Island and there is a tram and underground nearby. There is also an ''Irish'' Bar nearby if you want to catch the news or football/Gaa from home. I would strongly advise you to get a Berlin welcome card when you arrive at the airport I think it costs E45 but it entitles you to unlimited travel on all public transport systems and you get discounts at museums, tourist shops, some restaurants etc.

One cool thing to do is the Dining in the Dark experience www.unsicht-bar-berlin.dewhere you have a 3 course meal in pitch black darkness and your waiter is legally blind so neither you or your waiter can see anything. It is a surreal experience but one you will remember. I think you have to book in advance.

Most of the museums charge an entry fee including the state museums so be aware of this. As a previous poster said take the walking tour of berlin it is an excellent way of getting your bearing. I used this one http://www.newberlintours.com/ the tour guides work for tips so you will be guaranteed a good tour with them becuase you decide yourself what to tip them

Also be carefull the left hand side of foothpaths are actually cycle lanes and they are well used so keep to the right hand side on the paths I learned this the hardway. You havent been sworn at untill an angry German swears at you after they plough their bike into you.
