Those, of you hoping for a reincarnation of the old, tough workhorse, look away now because, its a badge engineered Dacia Duster. I like the Duster I truly do but I really think Nissan could have chosen a different name as those two types of vehicle are worlds apart in terms of their true heavy duty ability and driveline strength. However thats my only complaint so far. Im a fan of the "brick house" styling so things like the Duster and Nissans Navara rank highly in the looks department where Im concerned :o.
Theyve completely redesigned the front however taking design ques from the Navara itself, the rear at a push could be likened to the Pathfinder and imo, it works very well!

Itll be a duster underneath so business as usual regarding renault running gear but I think it looks well.

Extremely dated looking already but if available cheap they will sell. Interesting to see it's size in comparison to the new Qashqai.

    Dated? Id reckon... "simplified":p
Granted the Duster wouldnt look strange with '02 on its number plate but I like that about it and Nissans effort is definitely something else. Dunno if itll be as cheap as the Duster but itll be strange, on their part as while itll be vastly cheaper than the Qashqai, theyll both be identical in size so you'll see two crossovers directly competing.

Qashqai: More expensive but better interior, more refined, quiet and comfortable on the road, possibly more efficient and more toys.

Terrano: Much cheaper, simpler/cheaper interior with less toys. Therell be no competition in terms of road manners with the Qashqai but on the other side of that coin, there wont be any in terms of off road/Irish road ability either!

Itll all be down to what a Nissan customer is after Id reckon. (wallet size will probably be a factor though..)

I really doubt this will be sold in Europe.

Appalling both. I throw up in my mouth a little every time I get behind a Duster.

What?? Why?? Whats the point of this? Why not just buy a Duster?

It seems to be aimed at the Asian market where the Nissan badge is well known and where Dacia isn't.

Because Nissan would have a foot in the door in certain emerging markets with brands like Datsun and cars like the Datsun Go and Nissan Pixo. the Terrano will sell to people who wouldn't buy a "European" car and want a Japanese brand.

But its the same car, just a different badge!

I give you "Vauxhall" and "Opel".

You'd be surprised how often this is the case. The design brief for a lot of cars these days is 'just change the badges and the body'.

Not to forget the old model Terrano and Ford Maverick were the same thing too.

This box of tin is to a Terrano what the 2002 onwards Primera is to the Primera. A pastiche trading on old glories.

The old primera or Terrano were hardly high points to be fair :)

Wash your mouth out. :D I still have a 1998 2.0 td Primera with 280000 up as my daily hack-car and we sold our last terrano with over 400k on the clock for export. Hugely under-rated 4*4s.

The Primera that replaced the Bluebird was a class car to drive for its time, but relative to the competition - no primera since then was as accomplished or modern.

Indeed - it happens all the time. In some markets, Dacia's are sold as Renault (the Renault Duster/Sandero etc). The Nissan Platina that was sold is some countries was a Renault Clio variant with a Nissan badge.

It's about brand presence/positioning in particular markets

Yup. Here's the Renault Duster from Brazil.

280000 of the slowest miles fever driven, I drove one of those primeras once and it was so slow I thought it was broken:eek:

That new terrano looks ok, a lot better looking than the old one.

This Duster Terrano is initially aimed at the Indian market where the Duster is apparently well thought of, so the few improvements in the new Terrano are very welcome and reviews gives the nod to the Terrano as the one to buy.

Terano in Europe has a poor reputation, though third party parts from Brazil are lasting and the old 2.7DTi is in many a London TAXI, but it's not quite a tractor, but certainly not a saloon on the road, costly to maintain and currently expensive to run ~ though around year 2000 it was the most economical 4x4 with power and class.

The Nissan Terrano was did win it's class in the Paris Dakar two years in a row, but Nissan never capitalized on that, probably as the spare tyre was the only thing they brought back over the finishing line :) !

Yeah, there is that. But it's like a glacier, it just keeps moving, which is "a good thing". :D

Big miles does not equate to "good car". Unless you'd prefer we all drive around in old Volvos. (I do. It's great. But it's not the be-all and end-all.)

I reckon some people in here have never driven an interesting car in their lives.

Like you id rather they had used the Terrano name for something with proper type off road ability

Well it is an INDICATION of a good car if it can be durable enough to do very big mileages

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,151 ✭✭✭rovoagho

It's an indication of a reliable car. It's also an incredibly boring car - assuming it's not a sport variant - and ugly as sin. No offense to the OP, everything is relative. If reliability is your only factor in defining a good car, then it's a good car. For them.

More generally, the Skyline is indeed a good car. I can't stand them, mostly because they're driven by a bunch of tossers down my way, but I don't think many would disagree that it's a good car. And that's my definition of good.

Even "Nissan Dune" or something like that! The last terrano was made in 06 I think which shows us a lot about what they think of our memory capabilities!!! I drove a 3ltr Patrol engined one a few years ago for a while and it was an absolute savage. Rough as a bears arse but nothing would stop it and is was good on juice when empty, (28 mpg!) Really had to watch yourself on bends though, they were a relatively narrow yoke.

Hopefully the interior isn't as rattly and cheap in the new terrano.

I mean its an indication of a good car in general - and its not simply because of the ability to clock up the big miles - but its the reasons that a car can do big mileage - is what makes that ability an indication of a car been good.

Cars that can do big miles are more likely to have the following features

    1) well designed and engineered

    2) built well

    3) have had considerable thought put into their design - with a view towards real world use

    All imo of course
