Im really worried about our build cost spiralling out of control. We r considering hiring a qs. Anyone have any idea how much this service would cost??

It will be money very well spent!

Depends on the scale of the job.

If you are building a house from scratch, or completely renovating (150k +), then you would be looking at roughly 3% of the build cost for QS fees.

I pad €800 two years ago for a detail Bill of quantities which we then used to get quotes from builders. Once you have the list of ingredients it makes it a lot easier to compare like with like. He also helped negotiate and cross check the contract.

the one I used was based in New ross

We then paid by the question(s) for further QS input which worked well

That is very good value for your boq as generally its well in excess of that plus vat. I have never heard of paying by the question. How did that work exactly as it sounds like a mental way to charge?

remember there was a recession two years ago - so that accounts fro the price

It was not really priced pre Q - but he said he'll happily answer further questions, review variations etc, check bills etc for a small additional fee and quoted an hourly rate for it - but we jokingly stated that it was priced per Q

all worked very well for us - we ended up using about 3 additional days with odd bits and pieces
