Misdiagnosis of Asperger's?

Hello, decided to not go anonymous for this since I already mentioned i had Asperger's in another post.

Thing is I was wondering if it is possible for doctors to misdiagnose someone with Asperger's? I was diagnosed at 18 because growing up I had more or less all the symptoms, poor social skills, barely any friends, terrified of speaking, hard to keep up with trends and gossip, daydreamed constantly, was mentally drained after school, etc. But even after all that

But now looking over my diagnosis documents, which has been three years now, I wonder now if it was a misdiagnosis and could actually be just social anxiety or depression, since I seem to fit the traits of those too. The only reason though that I went with Asperger's more, was because I has a speech problem when I was younger. It's just that I seem to have outgrown a lot of the typical Aspie symptoms.

It just now people would say to me if they found out I had Asperger's they would think I did not have at all, I find myself slowly but surely getting with the trends and times, learning and adapting to new changes like college and meeting new people,
only downside is that I still find it hard to make friends, but that was due to bad experiances during school and living in a isolating rural area that might have hindered the development of social skills, but I am talking to more people now and even though they have seen me really awkward in class when speaking up, I think they have forgotton about it.
So I am wondering as the years go by, are adults more accepting of you, even if you are not "normal"

So what do you think, is a misdiagnosis possible?

Of course a misdiagnosis is possible. That's why we people get second opinions!

I wouldn't be getting too hung up on a particular label anyway, none of us is perfect. We just do the best we can.

A misdiagnosis is possible. but people who have Aspergers often grown and learn to manage themselves so that it becomes less and less obvious over time that they are on the autism spectrum.

    Hi OP,

misdiagnosis is of course possible, but nobody here is qualified to advise you whether this is the case for you. If you do have doubts as to your diagnosis, the only recommendation is that you get a second opinion from a specialist to satisfy any queries that you might have. Thread closed.

    Regards,
    Mike
