I got the train from Russia to Beijing (via Ulan Baatar) a few years ago. I booked every train journey at the local station had nothing prebooked, hate being on a stict timetable. St Peters-->Moscow-->Irkutsk-->Ulan Baatar-->Beijing.

Re Chinese embassy i had no trains booked to show them how I was going to arrive or leave the country. Only had my flights to St Petersburg booked so brought that in and told them I was going to get the train to Vietnam after China (again had nothing booked at that stage though) and they were ok with that.

I dont know how strict they are thse days on proving how you plan on leaving China or maybe if I was lucky on the day. I had my Russian and Mongolian visas already so it didnt look too bad. You could always get your Mongolian visa first so youll have something to show them in the Chinese embassy but whehter that would make any difference i dont know.

The Mongolian consulate is an Irish fella in Dublin i went out to his house and he did my visa in my passport then and there. Real nice guy.

I haven't been but I'm sure you'll be okay if you have your Mongolian visa and return flight details from Russia.

It can be very difficult to get tickets on the trains through Mongolia. We were on a tour a few years ago and even with their contacts the travel company couldn't get tickets for everyone. It might be easier east to west.

Amazing trip. Allow lots of time to go out to the countryside in Mongolia and stay in a ger tent. It was one of my best in a lifetime experiences. :)

I'm also planning on doing Beijing - St Petersburg via Mongolia.

I hoped to buy tickets in the stations as I traveled but already have flights booked into Beijing and out of St Petersburg.

For the Mongolian and Russian visas do I need to have exact dates and proof of entry/exit or can I travel across the borders as long as they fall within the dates outlined on the visas.

There is a lot of conflicting advice on different forums, so it would be great to hear from anyone that has booked train tickets as they went along the rail.
