Just checking that this will work with a Three network SIM card here in Ireland?

    Yes, that should work.
Just note though that you will need a micro sim.

From past experience, on the 2012 Nexus 7 3G, i never used the on board 3G.

I preferred to use a separate mifi modem instead. Benefits were:
    - less power drain on the Nexus,
    - other devices such as my phone could be simultaneously connected,
    - if you are in a building with poor reception you could set the mifi modem near a window for better reception.
    - if travelling and expecting to use a foreign sim you would need to ensure that the foreign sim was micro sim as well to use on the Nexus.

If going to meetings etc with my laptop i can still take the 3 modem with me and have Internet access on the laptop rather than have to lug the Nexus with me for tethering.
