Recently noticed that the emissions and mpg figures are actually better on the Fluence with EDC gearbox rather than manual. Would appreciate opinions on these please especially from current owners/drivers.

I haven't driven a renault EDC, but I think it's an Automated Clutchless Manual, very much like the Peugeot/Citroen set up.

I've driven the Peugeot/Citroen set up, and it's appaling - so bad, they are getting rid of it. The electronics in the car decide when it's time to change gear, and very rarely get it right. You're supposed to lift off when it's time to change up, but that doesn't work. Planting the foot doesn't work either. Marginally better using the maual shifter override, but still not a patch on a standard auto, never mind a dual clutch version.

Take one for a test drive and see if you can live with it. In reality, I doubt it would return better fuel consumption than the manual version - it's just set up to trick the emissions test and doesn't do as well in the real world.

Actually Renault are using two clutches, controlled with actuators and uses robotic control of a manual box, albeit a heavily changed one. One gear is pre selected while the current is engaged. Id recommend driving them as there is far, far less torque losses compared to normal, hydraulic automatic boxes giving it the efficiency youre seeing. That and the six speed box is geared towards efficiency in fifth and sixth. Youll do about 1,500 rpm at 80kmh iirc. Not much over 2,000 at 120kmh.

Ive driven the Citroen mentioned alright and they are worlds apart :D

Only disadvantage is you need the brakes to hold it on a hill as it wont use the clutch (like any good driver with a manual) to do so.

Have driven a Scenic with it and thought it was excellent and I'm used to driving automatics.

my renault megane coupe dci edc is quite nice. I've driven over 80k km in it without trouble.
gearbox isn't quite as good as a torque convertor I had in previous cars but it is quite good and of course much more economical.
On this tank of diesel which is still over half full I've so far covered 650km so that will be somewhere around 5l/100km by the time I'm empty with a daily mixture of town and motorway driving.
I'd expect any renault megane with edc on it to have a hill holder too. Mine does and I need it as I park everyday on an incline of in excess of 1 in 5.

I'm just back from a test drive in a 2012 Fluence with EDC and I must say I was well impressed but then I don't have a lot of experience of driving automatics!

With 6 gears and EDC I'm always in the right gear which I know I wouldn't be in if I were stirring it myself.
The only time it gets caught out in the wrong gear is going down a very steep hill near home. As it is going down hill I doubt it is burning diesel when in the wrong gear.
