Insignia - ESP warning and seriously bad sounding noise

We have a 2010 VX Insignia and a couple of days ago the ESP Service warning light came on the dash when the missus was driving it. It went away after the car was shut off.
I searched online and it seems it does happen from time to time so I was gonna wait until it happened again before getting it checked out...

Now, today the missus said the steering makes a funny noise when turning, so I went out to check for myself and started it up and straight away I thought it wasn't sounding right.... so while still stationary i move steering both directions and the sound is horrendous - not sure how to describe it but it sounds very very bad so now I'm worried what the hell it could be. I'll be ringing the local garage in the morning to come out and take a look.
Anyone able to hazzard a guess at what could be the problem?? or how big a hole in the pocket its gonna be??

I'm also a bit worried\sceptical because I recently moved to a new garage to get my servicing done and It was only serviced two weeks ago! So why couldn't they have found this issue if its serious?? Could they have caused it with shoddy workmanship??

Power steering pipes leak in them. Check your power steering fluid.

Many thanks for the responses! Yes I just went and checked the power steering Fluid and its absolutely bone dry!

Now, how much of a coincidence is this when the car was serviced only 2-3 weeks ago... and another question is wouldn't the steering fluid be something that they should be checking as part of a service?

I'm guessing we don't drive the car now, and get the garage to come and collect it?

Not a coincidence at all. Just bad luck.

The level would've been fine at the time of the service.

If you've a second car or a way to get get power steering fluid just top it up and drive it down slowly if it's not far.

There's a few on done deal if the pump is fecked http://cars.donedeal.ie/carparts-for-sale/2010-opel-insignia-2-0cdti-breaking/6677998.

Dexron 5 is the grade of fluid for them.

That fluid is gone for a reason. There was a fault and a recall as far as I know on those. My cousin had his piping replaced as it was cut and leaked.

Get thee to a dealer asap, as far as I can remember it can lead to the car catching fire.

I had a similar problem with my Alfa Romeo 159, strange sound when turning the steering wheel. I took it to the garage and they replaced the steering fluid with a higher quality fluid. Sound disappeared. I can remember the cost but it was something in the region of 30 euro. Hope this helps.

Turns out the power steering pipe was leaking. It needed to be replaced. Parts and Labour cost €280. Expensive but when I heard the awful sound first I thought it was something much worse and costlier..!

Did you ask at the dealers about the recall?

It was an import from UK, and I bought it up north. Not sure what I can do about it?

It's a common enough problem with the insignia. I have read about it on honestjohn.co.uk and i have experienced it myself just like in the op the wife was driving. she noticed something was wrong with the steering but not problematic enough to tell me about it for a couple of days. A chaffed pipe had burst and the car's warranty expired a few weeks earlier. The garage were sound and asked if I would pay half so that the part had would have a 2year warranty
