    Edge 1000

Looks interesting. I wonder will they have better phone integration?

It's very big, I don't get why. The 800/810 had more than enough space on the screen to display stuff. They could alter the resolution on the existing screen if they wanted but they went with 3" screen and a much bigger bezzel.

I wonder if the battery life is better... 15h of my 800 may require additional power on 300km+ rides.

dc rainmaker has a first look up already.

whilst some people will dig the text/call alert integration id hate it, cycling is one of the things i do where im not expected to be glued to my phone. i dont want to know if texts are calls are coming through as i cycle. i spose some people do though.

First pic I'd seen beside the 810. At the size of it, it should be a phone

Make sure to protect the connection and pack from the rain when its connected to your Garmin...

No thanks Garmin, leaving out Strava won't gain you any popularity!

Also, the retail price is around €600 I believe..

Cateye seem to have a much cheaper option for £70 that uses your phone and Bluetooth to perform similar functions:

Doing the fleche myself. What route are you taking?
I have a cheap duracel usb battery pack but I'm bringing a usb charger as well. We have a couple of long enough stops that I can probably charge them long enough not to need the battery pack. Will need it to top up the charge on my back up lights during the night as well. Probably unnecessary with dynamo lights but I prefer having the back up and the extra visibility they give.

Excellent - not only will it suit my cycling persona, but hopefully I will be able to make out what it's saying despite my dodgy eyesight ....:)

Feck, that was quick. Just after you get used to the idea of the 810, they go and launch another new model. Garmin Edge1000

Its around €100 more than the 810 for the head unit, and from what I can see it upgrades some 810 features and adds a few more - dual orientation, phone integration (iOS), segment based features (along with recent changes to Garmin Connect, they are obviously trying to prise users away from Strava, no doubt) and Di2 integration. More of this on DCRainmakers review. http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2014/04/garmin-edge-1000.html

    Available early next month.

when will the Garmin Edge 1000 be released ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 890 ✭✭✭Statler

Got one yesterday, first impressions, it's big. Side by side with the 810 it doesn't look that much bigger but on the bike it's much more noticeable. The main function I was interested in was the call/text notification, I get the whole 'leave the phone off when on the bike' thing but there's a couple of days a week that I have to be contactable when out for a spin, anyway, turns out that function only works on iphones, android compatibility expected 'later this year'.

The segment function doesn't seem to work yet, or at least I can't see how to create one, the Bluetooth connection with my phone drops in and out, and it's locked up completely twice in the last 24 hours when connected to my laptop. The new sensors are interesting, speed sensor goes on the rear hub, cadence sensor straps onto the left crank, I really can't see any benefit between them and the old GSC10 sensor though.

There's also no function to have multiple bike profiles on it. Build quality is very good, but I don't fancy it's chances of survival if dropped.

So, nice and shiny but buggy, typical new Garmin release. Screen is nice and clear, apart from that I really can't see the point in upgrading from an 810 unless they sort the call/text thing for android.

i see that the new cadence sensor ships with the edge 1000. Is it available to buy separately? My cadence sensor packed it in and would prefer this than the current model.

Doesn't seem to be widely available at the moment. Garmin Ireland site just has the speed and cadence bundle, on amazon.co.uk as well. The speed sensor is on some us site's and I found it on one French one. I'd get the bundle though I need the speed sensor for trainer road.

One thing to consider if you do get a stages or power2max you won't need a cadence sensor.

Saw it on a German site for €65. A pm is a while away so this would be a temp job

I've had ongoing issues with the new cadence sensor losing connection to the Garmin 1000, not sure if it's a head unit or sensor issue but just bear in mind there are problems with the connection. Having said that they released a firmware update last weekend, haven't tried it out yet but hopefully it sorts the connection issue, and the other multiple issues with the 1000.

Edit: Went for a spin this afternoon and can confirm the firmware upgrade has not fixed the sensor/ phone connection issues... The segment feature is a mess as well, and no sign of Android call/ text notifications....
