Swapping plate door handle for handle and escucheon

Hi, we have brass plate door handles on our internal doors. I want to swap them for polished chrome handles and escutcheons. Problem is the doors currently have two 1 inch holes (for the bars and keyholes). Is there some sort of bodge I can do for the keyhole cover? I was thinking maybe to fill it with something and glue the piece to the door?
    Thanks for any suggestions.

are the doors stained / wood effect or white?

Only hope you have is if they're white and up grained, otherwise it will look botched.

Hi dodzy, yes they are white. They are a sort of hardboard panel door with mock grain in it.
    Cheers

Wood filler, allow harden, sand, paint, and see how it looks. I'm sure the repair, no matter how good, will catch your eye though. It would do my head in over time though :o.

I see what you mean. But I would be hoping that the escutcheon would cover the filled hole. The keys for the locks are long gone so not bothered that the locks are not functional.

For a large hole like that you would be best of plugging it if possible with a piece of wood- depending on the actual size of the hole (probably 18 or 19mm?) you may be able to use a "dowel" cut from a piece of wooden broom handle pared down to suit. Undercut if possible and fill with a car body filler (can be easily shaped and sanded and won't fall out of the repair like a regular decorating filler). Bit of work involved, try out one door and see how you fare, but very do-able and as you say escutcheon should conceal bulk of the repair area.
