I'm in Waterford, any suggestions on where I could go to buy one? Online shops would also do.
    Cheers

I believe there is a CEX store in Waterford and the one here in Galway usually have a few socket 775 CPU's in stock, so I imagine they have a few moderately expensive ones in Waterford. I had a look on Ebay but unfortunately the price of a second hand Q6600 (nice all rounder with good overclock-ability) is high at the moment when you factor in postage. Just be aware that not every socket 775 CPU will work in every 775 motherboard, and not all 775 motherboards will allow good overclocking (which you should do if you can) so Google everything first.
Have a look on Adverts also.

I have a Q6600 and some other s775 CPUs I'd be willing to sell

    thanks for the fast reply.
Would the q6600 work with an Asus P45 mb?

I think it would work, but it's best to find out exactly what motherboard you have and check the CPU support list on the manufactures website. You can use Speccy to find out more about your hardware. You may have to update the BIOS.

    P45 will support Q6600.

No-one asked what you want it for, if its only desktop/web/media use, you could get a decent S775 cpu for under 20 euro delivered.

That's true, you could buy a Core 2 Duo second hand for ~ €20, but I would still recommend at least a quad core for cheap future proofing. I moved from an E4400 to a Q6600 and I definitely noticed the better everyday performance in Win7 even before I overclocked it. If you can find a Core 2 Quad cheap it would be better than a Core 2 Duo without costing much more. I picked up my Q6600 G0 stepping second hand for under €50 including postage.

E4400 is really slow though. I was thinking more like E8500. They can be gotten for 20-ish euro. Perfect for desktop use and even competent enough for most games (I played Battlefield 3, Black Ops 2 and Bioshock Infinite Single Player campaigns on one)

I got an E8400 delivered for €15 there of adverts.ie, some decent stuff there for not a whole lot. That will do 4Ghz if you're willing to overclock also.

Would probably want a quad core though considering how cheap they're getting now?
