Hello. We have just moved to Douglas Cork
I am looking for a good school for my son. He is three now
As I understand from threads I read Glasheen boys school is best but hard to get in
    What schools are good?
Is there information about St Luke's and St Columba's?

We know a good bit about the secondary schools for boys in the area and without a doubt, Douglas Community School would be the best. Very good teachers, good discipline, massive range of extra-curricular activities and they seem to have scholarship winner etc. every year. This year again, they got the highest result in the country in LC Maths. But anyway you want to know about primary schools.
There are a good few boys primary schools around Douglas. Its a pity theres not more mixed schools. Scoil Nicholas in Frankfield seems to be the exception and is very popular though very big. Although there is a Gael Scoil on the Sth Douglas Road but the problem I see there is that there doesn't seem to be alot of Gael Scoil secondary schools afterwards. St Anthonys in Ballinlough is popular with the SUV and 4WD brigade. Its very big as well and I'd prefer my kids to be in a smaller school myself. St. Columbas has always been a popular choice although traffic can be an issue. It has links to a couple of learning support units.
All in all, the schools in the area are generally very good.

Thank you for your reply. So glad to hear they all are good generally.
I am sorry if my question is stupid, is Douglas Community school and St Luke's School one same school?

Ah no sorry, Douglas Community School is a boys only second level school located just behind the AIB on the Douglas Road.
St. Lukes is a Church of Ireland primary school very near the two churches in Douglas Village. They seem to have small classes alright and they are mixed but other than that I don't know too much about St. Lukes although a friend of mine has her kids there and seems happy with it.

    Hi there,
I know from friends that Scoil Nioclais can be hard to get into - it has a huge catchment area and seems oversubscribed.
There aren't really mixed schools around Douglas (with the exception of St. Lukes).
St. Columba's, for both boys and girls are really good schools.
St. Anthony's isn't full of SUVs and 4WDs (as aratsarse101 suggests) - it's really not - it's a mix, like every school. From my little experience, the Principal is very capable and by October of Junior Infants, knows every child by name!
Glasheen is deemed a DEIS school - which means lower class sizes etc. TBH, I can understand why it's so hard to get into the school -it has everything.
    Good luck with your search.

    Thanks!
What primary do we have to go now so that to go to Douglas Community School then?
Is St Anthony's hard to get in?

Douglas Community School takes children from all the schools around the area. If you are interested in St. Anthony's, maybe call in and meet the principal - see if you like it there. Good luck!

I wouldn't worry about feeder schools for any particular school, as things change alot in 10 years and there doesn't seem to be as much of an issue getting in to boys second level schools anyhow. Plus there'll be two new second level schools in Carrigaline area by then and they will help with demand problems even in Douglas.
There is absolutely no denying there are a larger than normal number of SUVs and 4WDs outside St Anthony's. That doesn't say alot about the school anyway. But I'd agree about the principal as well.

(Former Cork resident, who may be a Cork resident in future hence still following the forum). I get the impression that you consider parents driving SUVs and 4WDs as a negative! I'm not sure why?? It certainly wouldn't be a reason
    I would avoid a school.

My apologies. It reads very poorly. What I meant to say was that whether there are SUVs or not tells you nothing at all about the school anyway. Or very very little. My bad

I agree with what you have to say. The best thing is to contact the schools you are considering, see if there is availability for the appropriate class level and then decide. In the Douglas area, I have heard some good stories about St. Columba's but have heard little about St. Luke's.

    Thanks so much!
Little is heard of St Lukes is because it is a Church of Ireland school and judging by the grounds school is small
St Anthony's looks like a really nice school
