    Hi guys,

I'm going to view an automatic Passat later. Its the latest model if that makes a difference.

I'm just wondering is there anything I should be looking out for?

I do currently drive an auto albeit it a 2ltr petrol Mazda 6.

The passat a diesel so will probably have different traits.

Anyway as I say anything I should check or be aware of on the test drive?

I will be getting a mechanic to look it over pre purchase but just in case theres anything obvious I should know about.

    Thanks a mil.

Which model are you looking at, 2.0 Diesel, Comfortline/Highline?

Very little to criticise on the new Passat, it may not be the most exciting but is a supremely well rounded package. I've read mixed things about the DSG to the extent that it would not be my first choice. Pay attention to dashboard rattles, the car is notorious for them, it may feel more premium than your Mazda inside but I bet your Mazda doesn't rattle.

Good luck, would be interested in your opinion.

    Highline model.

I do like the Mazda but its time to change and theres no diesel Mazda 6 Auto's about.

I'm kinda stuck with little choice. I dont particular like the Octavia or the Insignia which seem to the be the other choices for my budget and year. The Avensis is mainly manual and Mazda 6 the same. Mondeo is an option as there is a few Auto's about but not many.

... ps whats the issue with the DSG??

I've had no hassle at all with the Mazda 6's autobox. Have had no issues with the Mazda in general tbh. They're unbreakable!

The superb would be the soda equivalent. I'd assume the same year superb should be cheaper or at least similarly priced.

    Yup +1

Most rattly car I ever owned was a B6 Passat. How I hated that POS car.

But the Superb saloon is such an ugly, ill proportioned lump. The B7 is actually quite a handsome car.

OP Google the DSG thing, not sure how reliable they are.

There is a new passat due soon so bare that in mind according to my vw dealer It's a great looking car. My new golf has a creaking noise in the dash very annoying I have it booked in for investigating . This is my third golf and its a big improvement over the others !!

That will be late next year, and on VW's current form there is no reason to expect it to be anything other than a subtle evolution of the current car.

Nah it was a 2011 auto. Its on carzone at 15995. Black. I cant link it as im on my phone now but you'd see it handy enough if you search. Was being sold by Denis Gill Garage.

Anyway i test drove it earlier and to be honest i really couldn't see myself in one. I knew it wasn't going to be awe inspiring but it wasn't anything. It was very meh.

At least its one i can write off buying. I'll keep looking but but i can cross Passat off my list.

    2010 or more.

I'm thinking my choices in Auto are:

    Insignia and Mondeo.

    Manual:

Mazda 6 - only making an exception here as i really like the 6. Ive driven my current one for 3 years which is the longest ive had a car.

My random choice would be an Alfa 159 as i am an ex Alfa GT owner. Would love another Alfa buuut its hard to find a 159 with a good spec. Ie must have leather seats!!

    What about an s60?

Just looking on Carzone and a lot of the s60's seem to be manual, bleh.

I drove a manual insignia and the only problem I had with it was the gear ratios, so maybe an auto might be nice! It was also a small bit soft in the bends for me, but most decent size saloons are like this!

Have you considered a Citroen c5?

Btw I drive an Alfa 159, the lusso model has most of the toys (and leather) I'd say you would have to go to England for an auto Ti though.

Never even thought of the c5. Not sure if I like the looks of it to be honest. Will have another look.

Best car I've owned in the last 5 years in the terms of comfort, economy and spec . I bought a manual 2011 2.0tdi passat highline around 2 months ago and I'm loving it . The highline model is definatly the one to go for . I can't comment on the DSG version but I'm sure since its VW , u can't go wrong

The new Passat is due around September/October this year and is new from the ground up. The current B7 that Europe gets is just a heavily revised B6.

The current one was the subtle evolution (mid term face lift) although vw did try to call it an all new car.
    New one should be interesting.

If it's as big an improvement as the MQB cars are over the PQ35 platform it should be a very, very good car.

Ok really did not think I'd find something this quick that I liked but anyway here it is my new motor.

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Mazda/Mazda6/--DIESEL/44813959358540570/advert?channel=CARS

I put a €500 deposit on it there at lunch time.

Once I get it on my own turf so to speak next week I'll post up some of my own pics.

Quite happy with my purchase. 2 things I wasnt pleased about the purchase.

1st was is its not an auto. But that said the 6 is a car I'm happy to make an exception for as I've loved mine for the past few years.

2nd problem is that its more sporty looking than actually sporty. It is slighly upgrade inside as well as out being the facelifted model as well. Its not the engine I was really after. Theres a 163bhp version about but not that many at my price point unfortunatley so I settled for this one which is 129bhp. That said it pulled nicely on the test drive so I dont think its underpowered. Positive side to it I suppose is cheaper tax as the 163bhp version is €390 per year vs this one is €280 per year. Big woop in my eyes to be honest but it'll probably help resale in a few years time.

Outside of it being a manual and less powerful than I'd hoped it has the styling I wanted on the 6, ie the 18inch alloys which are gorgeous, tinted windows, spoiler hatchback. Also love it in black.

I paid 9k plus my 2008 Auto Mazda 6, which has 144,000 km on the clock.

I think I did ok on the price as he had the car on sale for 15k. He was looking for 10k plus mine but I got him to 9k. So essentially 6k for mine. I can live with that. The car owes me nothing, loan was fully paid off. Been a great companion for the past 3 years. Now back to a 9k loan :pac:

Anyway as I say pics to follow.

If the car is a 2 liter diesel check other VW,Audi, Skoda,Seat forums on the net. The 2 liter vagTDI engine is getting a poor reputation for oil pump failure which in turn leads to catastropic engine failure, this is a well known fact by VW group ( Audi ,VW, Skoda, Seat) My research started when my Skoda Superb TDI with 80,000 mls put a con rod out the side of the engine, I discovered that the engine which was code BXE are notorious for throwing conrods. My car was 4years old when it happened and outside warranty. I have been driving Skoda diesels since 2000 and believed the TDI engine was bulletproof. VW group have modified a lot of the internals of the original TDI engine, leading to problems which manifest when the car is a couple of years old , do a background search on the net, if you know the engine code check to see if there is any information on it. I wish I had carried out my research before i got the Superb . I will be staying clear of VAG engined cars in the future. Best of luck with your new purchase.

BXE was the 2.0 PD engine which were replaced in mid 2008. They were replaced by CR units which don't carry over the same issues.

what 6 did you get? Petrol or diesel?

if you put a deposit on a diesel 6 id advise you to think about looking at something else as mazda diesel engines are junk tbh.

Well wear, I had the 129 but it did 144 on a dyno. Really feels more than it is to be honest. The timing chains can stretch on them and check the history thoroughly. Unless it's been serviced before the schedule every time I'd be slow to buy one.
