Just a quick question to clarify something - I have recently purchased a used car from Japan and obviously as it has no registration plate etc I have it booked for its VRT inspection at an NCT centre tomorrow...

I have motor trade insurance but no trade plate - can I legally drive the car to the test centre ?? As I understood it there was some loophole that providing you have insurance you can drive the car to present it for VRT?

I can't really think about any exception that would allow vehicle not registered nowhere to be driven on public road, even if you have valid insurance for it.

"FOR REG" scrawled on to an 'aul scrap of cardboard and you'll be grand. *

Haha pity we are still not back in the 80's - I just thought there was surely something which would provide an exception that you can drive an unregistered car for the purpose of presenting it for VRT.

I'd just do it. (but take the back roads just in case..... I'd say you PROBABLY be OK if you met a Gard provided you had all the documentation and the appointment letter/email

I would do normally but I'm in Navan and I needed to register the car this week and Arklow is the nearest test centre I could get an appointment at so its a bit of a drive - I will have all the documentation but just seems a bit of a grey area so would wouldn't like to risk having the car seized

Safest option would be to stick it on a trailer.
