hi all. i am currently researching some info on rottweilers before i take the on commitment of purchasing one! i really love the breed and really am considering getting a pup in the very near future. As any one who know these dogs know that that they are a very strong and powerfull dog so it takes alot of commitment to have one. i would love to hear from rottweiler owners or any one who has had experiences with. especially those owners with kids and other dogs.

How are you planning on buying it? Do you have an identified breeder with a litter due soon that have done the relevant health checks (with the paper to support it)?

i have been checking out some legit breeders and have been assured that all is above board with relevent papers. im staying away from the likes of done deal and gumtree to avoid dodgey breeders.

I am an owner of 3 rotties, 2 males and 1 female. I show them too.

Just to be aware they are on the Restricted Breeds list which means by law, they are suppsoed to be muzzled and on the lead at all times in public.

Rotties are amazing dogs, are fabulous with kids too. Yes they are a big powerful breed that need loads of socialisation and training from the word go.

Please please make sure when you go looking for your pup that you choose a breeder that health tests the parents, ie Hip Scoring. Do not even entertain a breeder who has not Hip Scored both parents of the pups.

Stay clear of Donedeal when sourcing your breeder.

Contact the Rottweiler Club of Ireland for more information. www.rottweilerclubofireland.com

We have our annual Rottweiler Club SHow on Saturday 10th May in Dublin, so you should try and pop down and talk to all the exhibitors and breeders there for information on Rottweilers. Its a great day out.

Here is the link to the schedule for our show: http://dogshowentry.ie/OnlineEntries/Doc/Schedules/RCI_SCH14.pdf

If you want anymore information just ask and ill be happy to help out.

There is one breeder that looks legit but is far from it. If you pm me i will let you know who it is. As the club have been getting a lot of complaints recently about this breeder.

If you contact the secretary of The Rottweiler Club of Ireland they can also provide you with reputable breeders.

Also be aware it is now illegal to Dock after 6th March of this year, so anyone selling docked dogs are breaking the law, so again, something to be aware of.

I was just about to post the same thing. I met a girl recently who has one of his pups. She was talking about being welfare minded etc and how her dog is a great example because she's a "*breeder**" pup. The bitch was 6 months old and about the size of Phoe. I was shocked and told her. In fairness I know the dog she came from and he's a beautiful dog with a great personality but I can't imagine the bitch considering how tiny the pup is. Apparently the whole litter is that size.

Thats the thing. Not all pups in the litter will be excellent examples of the breed. In a litter you are doing well to get one or two show quality pups. A lot of pups can and will have major faults but people cant and wont admit it.

The fact they bred from a bitch who was undersized by a fair bit and the tiny pups are being sold as a great example of the breed to people who didn't research enough is bad enough. The fact the owner told me her pup is mini-rott is worse. :(

just as a matter of interest andreac at what age do you decide which pup/pups have the potential for excellence I have often wondered do the pups show their potential early

It all depends really. I spotted the fella i kept along with one other male in the litter nearly from the word go. Red collar boy caught my eye after a few days as he had a fab head, but as they grew, i much preferred the shape of the one i kept, Viktor.

You cant really make a decision until they are at least 7/8 weeks and even then you might have to run 2 on for a few extra weeks if you cant make up your mind.

I was lucky that i kinew at around 6/7 weeks who i was def keeping and im very happy with my decision as im in touch with all the puppies owners that i sold to so i see pics of them all the time.

Heres a little photo of the pup i kept, side by side, around 5/6 weeks and now at 7months.
