Heat from pipe melting plasterboard

There is a pipe for the heating above my sitting room ceiling that seems to be too close to the plasterboard and caused a small hole in the plasterboard about 6 cm in diameter. Is there anyway to repair this without pulling up the carpet and floorboards upstairs?

    Thanks

Are you sure it's a plumbing issue and not just a (rather large) nail pop issue? A picture would help here...

Plasterboard Dsnt melt , I think you may have a different issue altogether

I haven't actually seen the damage. The tenants described it as melting the plasterboard. The agency managing the house had someone look at it and he said the damage to the plasterboard was caused by the heat from the pipe. Is there an easier way to fix this without pulling up floorboards?

I have something similar in my house on an internal wall. I haven't gone about fixing it yet as it's behind a free standing kitchen unit so not that visible. It does 'appear' that the plasterboard is melting. The only solution I can see is to rip the plasterboard down, recess the hot pipe somehow and replaster :/

Maybe there's a slight leak and the water mixed with plaster is dripping/flowing down.

This sounds more probable . I use plaster board behind fittings at times when I'm soldering and the heat from the blow torch Dsnt "melt" it . I don't see how a pipe could

I have done the same as egass13 and no melting. we all have (plumbers) used scrap plater board as as a soldering surface, no melting. my money is on JamesM 's idea slow leak / condensation. also i would say a 6 cm hole isn't small.

Lift the floor above the pipe and put a sheet of paper under the pipe and leave for a day or two, is there a pipe joint nearby , test for damp in the area , any water spills on the floor above?

Probably shouldn't have used the word melting. As I said that's how the tenant described the damage. I was thinking foam insulation over the pipe would stop the plasterboard from over heating?

if I did lift up the floor upstairs and move the pipe a bit higher, does anyone know how much the job would cost roughly?

I think you seem a little confused here.Previous post here have said a heating pipe would not disintegrate plasterboard and i have to agree.I would be of the opinion of a slight leak as james said earlier.i would think that you have a 6cm hole with a few brown circles around the 6cm hole.To some people these brown circles give an appearance of burning or something hot when it is actually water staining.
Is there an ensuite off the room upstairs?
I wouldnt be taking up floorboards upstairs to fix.i would cut a 8"x8" square piece out of the ceiling to see whats happening above.Reason being your ceiling has to be fixed anyway
