Seems the Munster Labour MEP Phil Prendergast has decided to take the safe sex matters of the nation into her own hands, so to speak :pac:

Very informative. A dildo can double up as a towel holder. Must get one for the mother in law

I don't see what the cringe is. It is a respectable woman teaching teenagers how to take precautions to prevent them from making mistakes that will have a drastic impact on the rest of their lives.

Given the level of teenage pregnancies, the fact that more children are born in Ireland out of wedlock than in and the level of ignorance regarding sexual health, I only wish far, far , far more people would do what she is doing.

It's very sad that a of minority people still think that a marriage cert makes a difference to a child's upbring.

I would go so far as to say its even more than sad - its worrying. You really see people in their true colours now that debate has started re same sex marriage ("wont someone please think of the children?!"). Mum and Dad better than two mums, two dads, one mum etc.... does't matter if they are not capable of parenting, its the "family unit" thats been burnt in our minds.

Personally, I blame Anne and Barry :P

In a specific case - nothing. I'm sure there are plenty of cases where everything has worked out fine for the child/parents (in fact, I know of some). But when over half the children born today are being born to parents who have not yet may a decision to commit themselves in the long term, then that is a scary statistic.

When I'm talking about marriage, I'm not talking about a religious marriage. I'm talking about the fact that, prior to having a child, it would be ideal if the would-be parents were at least in a place where they were already committing to being with each other for the rest of their lives (even if it is an optimistic/naive commitment).

I mean, marriage itself isn't definitive - many will break down at some stage, but it's at least a good start. But when over half the kids are born to unmarried parents, you must surely accept that a significant number of them must be "accidents" where couples, not yet ready to commit long term, inadvertently end up with an unplanned pregnancy. How many of these unplanned pregnancies are down to the lack of thorough knowledge and practice of safe sex?

The simple reality is that the attitude to sex education, sexual health and family planning is still in the ignorant catholic dark ages for many people in this country and I will fully support anybody who is trying to teach teenagers even some of these things in a non-judgemental, non-religious manner.

Who says the parents haven't? A couple don't have to get married to make a long-term commitment to the relationship.

If you can read this, you're too close!

You're correct, they don't have to. But the majority of people do so via marriage as it gives them certain crucial financial and legal protections in relation to both their long term relationship and their children.

The only committment that matters is one's committment to the child.

Funny thing is back in 5th year in my school she gave us a sex ed class it was painful LoL

Just showed us what will happen to our willy if we have sex and how sex can also be good.

Also told us anel sex was wrong LoL

She was also at my door about 2 years ago and made sure that i was reg for voting.

Not a labour fan but considering she's the only MEP that i have ever seen at my door so might get a vote from me

Wow, we are really getting off topic here (the fact that somebody is attempting to teach our teenagers the most basic aspects of sex education and all the first posts on this thread are ignorant, childish responses).

You are clearly not reading my posts and just trawling through them looking for something to argue about. I have made it very clear that, when I speak of marriage, I am not talking about weddings or religious blessings etc, but about commitment (in relation to a declaration of long-term commitment, both in terms of love and a financial/legal perspective).

Marriage gives the couple certain legal and financial protections which, from your reply, you clearly don't think are important - but I do. As a man, I don't want to father a child outside of marriage as, in this country, it leaves me in serious legal limbo in relation to paternal rights. With regards legal rights in relation to stressful medical situations, not being married may mean I have no right to have a say in how my partner/child is treated. From a financial perspective not being married can cause havoc in relation to supporting my partner/child in terms of taxation, insurance, pensions and inheritance.

I apologise for appearing responsible and wanting to approach sex and pregnancy as an adult. I will let this thread return to sniggering at willies and vaginas.

    I accept your apology :D

Now, if you'll excuse me I have to go to the pub and meet with my plethora of basket case friends who grew up in Ann and Barry land with parents who wrecked their childhood by staying together when they really should have been living apart.

ps I agree with you 100% regarding the legal status of Dads, and that is from a woman's perspective. I think a lot of women engage in a strategic use of the law when it comes to barring orders, maintenance etc, but I certainly wouldnt want someone to marry me to ensure greater right of access to their children. Who said romance was dead?

It disgusts me that you can make such a statement about one of our elected representatives.

Sex is a gift from God, and can only be said to happen when a man and his wife show their love for each other with the blessing of Our Lord Jesus Christ through the sacred institution of marriage.

Any deviation from this is an act of Satanism.

Also, there are real health and safety issues here. That dildo she showed can cause damage to your sphincter if used on maximum setting and can be difficult to clean afterwards, according to a friend of mine.

The serious side of me thinks 'fair play, politician decides to try and educate people about safe sex'.

Then she announces that the model penis can also double up as a towel holder. Dinner parties chez Prendergast must be fascinating, especially with a 'come dine with me' style poke about the gaff.
