Any advice on what to do with your sole trader business while on maternity leave?

    Hello,

I am about to register as a sole trader and begin a new, small business. Currently I am in full time employment, I am also 4.5 months pregnant and due to go on maternity leave later this summer.

My problem is that I cannot work on my business and receive an income while on maternity leave, as that would void my maternity benefit.

I am seeking advice on what to do for the period that I will be receiving maternity benefit. Would it be easier to begin my business as a partnership, and let my partner take over the running while I'm on Maternity Leave?
Or should I consider taking on an employee for the duration of my Maternity Leave?

Or is it possible to run my business myself while on maternity leave but not take any payment/wage from the business? Any profits could be put back into the business for the duration of this period to help grow it.

Any solid advice would be appreciated

The business is not in existence?

You do not have to register as self employed for the first assessable period but can register for the second period and pay tax for year one and year two.

You are a PAYE employee at the moment?

Is there any way you could step back from the business until your maternity leave is finished?
