Demolition Order

As part of my college thesis I am dealing with planning. I am talking about a case which I read about in 2010 in Meath where a stunning detached property was ordered by the courts to be demolished. It was built with no planning permission at all. This is a long shot but I was wondering was this house actually destroyed?

News article from the time is below:

This was in the news in the last two weeks.

The owners have been ordered and given a time frame to demolish it.

Savage house but they never had planning permission.

What happens if they dont knock it when they are supposed to ? Jail ? Fines ? Or will the council knock it for you ?

i dont think anyone in their right mind would demolish their own house.

The owner would probably go to jail sooner than demolish his own house.

In the south of spain the council will demolish the house for you !

the cost of demolishing that house and disposing of it in a licensed tip and separating all the various materials etc... would be insane.

id head for a bit of a holiday in jail before id do that!!!!!!!!!

he was some lad to built 6000 Sq ft and no planning - he certainly did it in style!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
no attempt to hide the house etc..... only in Ireland!!!!
absolutely feel his frustration with the overall planning system!!

I know of three that went up last year without planning , 2 were modest chalets really but 1 is a good 2500sqft and they are putting an extension on it at the minute . Its not easy get planning now

One part of me says fair play to him for doing it and getting away with it. Another part of me thinks why should he get away with it when his neighbour down the road goes through the proper Chanel's and gets slapped with a bill for 13 or 14 k.
Anyway who would want to drive the digger to knock a family's home??

I think on principal the house should be knocked. Why should he get away with building a house without any planning at all. It may be forgivable if he changed the design a little or build a little higher than he was supposed to but to build a house without planning is madness.

Hello WhiteWalls. I am interested to know what exactly is your "thesis" in respect to laws on property development in Ireland? Is it a comparative study? The UK situation is very different, as is the approach to planning on mainland Europe. Having lived in all three - as well as currently in USA with its very different approach - would love to hear what your research idea is.
