    Hey

I'm in the market for a new carbon bike around the €3500 mark. I'm looking for something with a decent groupset and a decent pair of wheels to save on upgrades. Any ideas on which would be a good buy ?? Thanks !!

Are you racing? Seems crazy to spend that much money on a bike if you dont intend to go racing. Bike half the money would be sufficient.

If you're spending €3,500 why not get a Prestige make, rather than the likes of lesser/budget type brands..although you get a high parts spec, most people will get the best frame/ make they can and keep it for years, adding bits to it..
You don't have to be a racer to have a snazzy bike! ;)

+1 on the kinetix line, was out in their warehouse recently, it's like Ali babas cave. They have sone absolute stunning bikes, most if not all come from ex professional teams but sone are brand new or very lightly used.

of the bikes available I have owned and loved both the specialized venge s - works and the SL3 s works. Would highly recommend both

Everyone to their own - I'd be willing to bet that at least half of the €5k+ bikes that are sold here are never raced! Why should someone not have a really nice bike if they can afford it?

The full bikes there seem to be comming without wheels, at least the ones I was looking at had that said in the footnote. But holy @#$% those Scott bikes look nice, the Foil especially.

What's the deal with these guys? How come so many ProTour bikes are ending up in a warehouse in Ireland? Wouldn't most of those bikes be in bits by the end of a hard race season?

I can only assume they have the contacts in the business. I have no affiliation to them so I can't answer your question definitively. As for the bikes being in back nick, far from it. Yeah sone that the teams use will be worse for wear but others will probably never leave the service course and might not see a single km of the road but once they get new models, colour schemes they all go.

I was out there maybe a month ago and they had the whole vacansoleil service course in, bianchi bikes all over the place and every one ofthem imimmaculate. Even the well used bikes have professional mechanics looking after them every day and group sets and cranksets changed as the course they are using them for suits.

If you ever have reason to go out and look around you will see what I mean and not be disappointed plus you'll probably leave a few k's lighter

Because the spec on a 5k bike is designed for racing i would assume. It would be like buying an F1 or rally car for driving around the city only. The OP stated his/her intention of going racing in the future so the title is very appropiate here.

I'm not convinced the Kinetix stuff is great value.

    e.g

Canyon Ultimate CF SLX, 2011 model, Record 11sp, no wheels, €2150.
    http://kinetixproducts.com/shop/index.php?route=product/product&path=59_60_115&product_id=467

Canyon Ultimate CF SLX, 2014 model, Record 11sp, Ksyrium SLR WTS, €4200.
    http://www.canyon.com/_en/roadbikes/bike.html?b=3292#tab-reiter2

Those are €1400 wheels, and if you subtract that from the new Canyon price you get to €2800.

The Kinetix bike is therefore 77% of the new price for a 3 year old model with no manufacturer warranty.

If you want an ex-pro bike by all means fill yer boots, but they're not bargains.

Isn't racing a really expensive bike a bit mad? I always thought that the adage was 'don't race what you can't replace'. I would be more likely to ride the really good one at times when you are less likely to get brought down.

So the answer to the original question is that the OP needs 2 new bikes.

You can get a further 200 quid off this with your racing licence...I have this bike eyeballed from a long ways out, currently gathering the sheckles...

Some €5k bikes are designed for racing, but there's no shortage of €5k bikes that most certainly aren't.

Sure a bike is only as good as it's engine, a high end bike may be like an F1 race car, but one with a tractor engine powering it! :D

i'd put it closer to buying an Aston Martin or a Ferarri. most of them never see the track. They are bought cause they are a pure delight to drive, and give the owners enjoyment. much the same as buying an expensive bike

I just built up one of the Westbrook Cycles deals - Scott Foil 2012 Team Issue HMX with 6870 Di2 Gruppo, all in cost me 2700 included bars, stem, build etc. Bike is fantastic and the Ultegra Di2 has been sensational to date, not missed a beat even when I have cross chained with the power on while chewing the handlebars :)

Would be canyon all the way for me. lb for £ they're hard to beat. Plus they've proper pro-tour kudos which is always a nice (useless, needy) seal of approval. :)

Thats why its a good idea to insure your bike. My bike was 3600euro and i have it insured as I race and do sportives.

They are performance cars. Most people never see the benefits because they dont race them. Same thing goes with an expensive road bike.
