How to finish shaddow gap on stairs

    I have put in a new stairs with a shadow gap on side. The painter has let paint into some of it which draws attention to the gap. its very unfinished looking (not to mention full of dirt). How do you finish these gaps - usually painted? silicon or just raw wood? I would have left raw wood if there was no paint in some parts but now I need to do something to tidy it up
