    Sounds dirty.

Thank god i was only a few seconds from pulling into the drive.
A local speedramp put the nail in the coffin.

Got the car up with a hydraulic jack i got in Lidl a few years back and never used so that got me smiling for a few seconds.
Bad rust, i wont blame the ramp.

My question is, What's the safety with driving without one?

What's the average cost of parts and labour?

I rang my usual place, quoting €200 all in.

    Its a 2008 Mondeo.

Is rust the Problem? i know the brackets of my exhaust system had perished and got new brackets welded for €30 in a exhaust centre (08 Seat Leon)

Rust does seem to be the problem alright. The brackets were ok, it was the pipe end that came away.

I remember the last service i had he made a comment about the rust underneath.

It's impossible to say really without looking at it.

It might be a case of welding it back together, or you might need a new part or few parts.

Driving without one is probably not a great idea, but you should make it to the garage. Depending where is it broken.
If your car is diesel, and fumes might get into the cabin, it might be actually poisonous. Then make sure you drive with open windows.
Also have a look cracked pipe is not pointing into some plastic underneath, as hot fumes might just melt it. It would be quite bad if it was plastic fuel tank.

Generally some time ago when my silencer came off, I drove without it for a while as I loved the sound ;)

the point at where it broke, is slightly angling down so i suppose im lucky(ish)

Would a photo help me get a idea if it needs to be replaced or welded?

    aye a photo would help.

is it rust on the underside of the car, or just rust on the pipe? If it's the pipe, they'll just weld in a new part, and it'll be fairly cheap.

if it's the car...possibly more, depending on how extensive it is.

all i can say is get it done as soon as you can. Rust sucks.

For me it looks like it's fine (safe) to drive with.
It might be bit annoying for others though as it will be much louder.

In relation to fixing, it might be still possible to weld it, but I doubt it will last much longer after that. Maybe a year or two max.

Get into some exhaust place, and they will tell you what is the best option when they see it.

Looks like it came away at back of the rear box. If so, its fecked. Not sure of your model but would not be surprised if the backbox includes a pipe. Have a look further up the pipe ( en route to the front and see where the next bracket is located. If its under the centre of the car, then most likely a rear silencer with integrated pipe might be all you need. You have the jack. They are easy enough to replace. If they are quoting 200 all in, you'll save a good few quid DIY. Just need to identify exactly where the next join is and ring them with your model for a price supply only. If you specify the part you need as oppose to just saying "me exhaust is knackered", then you will be less likely to get screwed.

    thanks for the advice.

i bartered with my local garage and getting a new one put in for 175e which im happy to pay.

This is a very common place for mondeo exhausts to break and is quite a cheap fix if you still have the back box. Depending on where you go it should only cost you around €40 to have it welded back together. €175 for a new back box is way over the top unless you went to main Ford dealer??? I work in a tyre and exhaust centre and we've welded a lot of these and they've been running fine for a long time after the work was done.
