Hitting Wrong Golf Ball

I could not find my ball at first. I then found a ball with similar marking on it to mine but I only realised this when I found another ball which was in fact my ball. I penalised myself 2 shots and played my proper ball and finshed the hole out.

My question is what would happen if I had not found my ball and finished the hole out with the incorrect ball. Bare in mind I was playing a stroke competition.

If you cannot 100% identify your ball then your ball is deemed to have been lost, even if there are two players both standing there and two balls. If neither of you can tell the difference then they are both deemed lost.

How could you tell the second ball was yours if it had the same markings as the first?

If you tee off on the next hole without correcting your mistake, you are disqualified.

Similar is not equal to the same

They were similar enough that the OP didnt realise it was his ball until he found another ball.

OP, what marking were you using? something you had added yourself (pen mark etc) or something else?

Its crazy the number of people who just throw down a new ProV1 and dont personalise it imo.

Yea it's stupid. It's recommended you mark your balls with something so they can be easily identified. I always circle the number and put a line under the prov1.

So for example you hit a provisional because the first may be lost and it lands in a similar area (for example a blind tee shot). How do you know which ball is in play if you find only 1 or both, assuming both have the same number too?

That's my new exact method of marking my ball from now on- just because I can :-)

Two blue dots below the name and to the right, if you find one like that give me a shout so I can get it back;)

I've done this to two lads on boards (I won't name names)and 2) things:

-firstly, yes it makes you feel like a right plonker the first time and
    - no I couldn't apologise enough the second time

    ....I shall sleep well tonight!!

Because I never hit one with the same number. And if it's unavoidable I will just put another mark on it!

Edit- and I never use a prov1 for provisional, can't afford to lose 2 on the one hole!

Feel free. I seen it on a ball I found and liked the way it was marked. So there will be three of us now!

I hit wrong ball recently, after picking it up, cleaning & placing it. It didn't have my mark on it and it wasn't even the same brand!
Bad lapse of concentration. Playing partner had just done same with my ball. Both balls middle of fairway.
I realized my mistake at next shot, penalized myself 2 shots and scratched the hole.

It's not first time it's happened to me. I do put a distinctive mark on my ball but there can be occasions when I lose my ball and pull out a replacement which is unmarked.

I marked my ball with 2 black dots either side of the number on the ball.
The number on my ball was different to the ball I hit but I did not realise this until I found my actual ball. My mistake was not checking the number on the ball before hitting. Next time I will make sure to give my ball a unique marking

I have a contact where, I can pick up prov1 for €1 a piece the exact same ones you see around pro shops in the country for €2/€2.50.:D

I write my name on my ball and every ball I hit. If I have multiple balls of the same number and type I number them myself.

You only make that mistake once.

I know a lad who puts the last 3 digits of his gui no., on his balls. He was out one day and he noticed that his playing partner was actually using a ball with his gui on it. Lifting the ball from play, he duly verified same, said 'thats mine', and put it into his bag. His partner couldn't believe it!

What are the chances of that happening!!!

I hope you are right. I will make sure to have a unique mark from now on that almost makes it impossible for someone to have the same.
