Applying and adjusting own handicap

Would anyone know roughly the best way to give yourself a handicap and adjusting without being a member of getting proper GUI membership? It doesn't need to be exact just really a way of gauging what you should be playing off roughly just to try and set goals etc.

Played a lot of golf last year and said I'd play of 18 for this year and see how it went. Played three rounds so far and the scores were 37, 29 & 33. Would 18 be right in this case and if so at what put would you put yourself up to 19 or down to 17?

I wouldn't be bothered getting actual GUI membership as only play against friends and tend to play lots of different courses, thanks.

When getting your handicap any score worse that a double bogey is marked back to a double bogey, other than that pretty much the same as day to day they just average over 3 cards, pretty easy to work out, the variability comes from course to course, some will allocate in the 20's some no more than 18.

There are a lot of websites out there where you can track your scores and it will assign you an unofficial handicap. You just need to enter the course details ie par and SI for each hole etc and it'll work it out for you.

Google "Golf Handicap Tracker" and you'll get loads of results.
