I am trading in a piece of equipment I have had for years (prior to registering for Vat) DO I have to account for vat on the trade in even if I have never claimed the vat on the purchase?

If you didn't claim vat on the purchase then you dont have to pay on the trade in. This is not a good for resale in your business.
