Help! - Onkyo TX-NR609

    Hi again,

Having a problem with my Onkyo TX-NR609 - recently bought off ebay. Seller with excellent feedback assures me all was ok with it so I am inclined to trust him. I am a total novice with AV receivers. Never had one before.

Issue - When I start up the device the speakers are not detected. When I do a factory reset or if I turn the unit off and on it seems to remedy the problem.

Onkyos are famous for hdmi board issues - I have read so much about HDMI board issues that I am probably in two minds whether it is this problem or not -

    1) When I power up the device I can change inputs no problem - the only thing that is not detected is the speakers (no speaker graphic)

    2) I still have access to the network and did a firmware up date - network is not greyed out which is a common symptom of a bad hdmi board.

I just want to be absolutely certain it is the HDMI board before I engage in the very annoying and probably expensive process of returning this unit to the UK. I also got a great deal on the unit so I'm desperate to try and do everything to remedy the problem.

To summarise: The speaker graphic does not appear when it is turned on and the 'starting hdmi' message appears on the screen. However, there is network access. To get it to work a power off or reset has sorted it out.

I have also contacted Onkyo by email, hopefully they will come up with something.

    Any advice greatfully received

Are you sure that that last firmware was downloaded over the network? Onkyo have blocked the download of the last couple of FW upgrades over the network direct to the amp, you have to download onto a USB stick on a PC and insert the memory stick into the amp to do the upgrade.

The most recent firmware upgrade for the TX-NR609 has the message that it cannot be downloaded direct from the network.

The latest version for the 609 is 1141-1700-0010-9107, check your menus to see if that's the version on your receiver.

I assume the OP got this sorted but for anyone else - I powered on my TX-NR509 this morning and got no audio from any channels and network/update was greyed out. I tried a full reset to no avail. It turns out it's a known fault and Onkyo are repairing it F.O.C.; I've put through a return for repair and I'm awaiting the packing materials: http://www.eu.onkyo.com/en/customer-service-program-118747.html

I got the amp back yesterday (it was collected on the 9th) and it's back in full working order, it's great to have it back, fair dues to Onkyo.

Have the TX-NR515 and occasionally get sound drop-outs. I thought the return process would take weeks... a fortnight isn't so bad. I had considered the rebate, but you only get £110 worth, so it would still cost a fair bit to get the newer NR535

Can you explain further please- what is the 'return process' and what is the 'rebate'? I have the 515 and it's working fine, I'm just wondering if you're referring to some kind of upgrade path?

    All info here http://www.eu.onkyo.com/en/customer-service-program-118747.html

If you experience sound/video drop-outs on your unit they'll take it off you and repair it, or offer you a rebate if you buy a new unit.

Thanks, will check it out. I notice the 535 has no front HDMI port, that's currently where I plug in my Chromecast so it would be a big hassle to lose it, otherwise I'd have to leave it permanently plugged in at the rear.

Funny, I never thought about plugging in Chromecast to Onkyo, always did it direct to TV for some reason.
You could get a cheap HDMI extension cable somewhere?
Main feature that it has over the 515 is Bluetooth which is always handy.
