I've started putting Ewes and lambs out to the grass i've been keeping for them. Its slighly lower than i hoped so i've understocked it to start. I will be adding ewes to it next week

I don't plan on feeding concentrates once the go into the grass. I see a lot of neighbours feeding ewes and lambs in good grass. I don't think its needed.
What do ye think. If they have enough grass , the shouldnt need conc .. right ?

    I would agree.

It mentioned a heigh for grass there in the journal a few weeks back, at which point yer ok not to feed ration. Cant remember what it was tho... maybe 5cm?

I should add I am feeding my ewes at grass this year, so maybe you shouldn't be listening to me ;)

If you have good fresh lush grass, then cannt see what concentrates could add to that .

Was there not something about the height of the grass being able to cover a golf ball, as the ideal height?

    That seems little enough grass?

Edit : although sure now that I think about it, 5cm which I mentioned above isn't that much more than that, if that...

Google rotational grazing and Teagasc and you'll get the figures. From memory I know the height for set stocked land is supposed to be a consistent 5cm in height before supplementation. I think for rotational they go in at around 6 or 7cm and come out at 3-4cm maybe but check that as I'm not 100% on it.

Any farmers here play golf? Supposed to be seriously addictive, so I avoid it.

That and the idea of wandering around a field, littered with bushes and puddles, looking for a small lost white thing, seems a bit too much like work!
