infant health care, why so disorganised?

Really just curious with a bit of venting...why is the health care for babies in this country such a mess, totally disorganised and disjointed?

Our 2 month old was very sick recently. Went to gp who sent us straight to hospital. Care was great, no problem there (apart from abysmal food and crappy facilities). Now the hospital sent a note for follow up to the pnh. Pnh made appointment but didn't really do anything. They also only keep written records, nothing computerised.

This means that the gp has some info, the hospital has some info, the pnh has some info, but no one has an actual overview and record of this incident or the entire history, including follow ups etc. So it's up to me to keep everyone posted?

Why did the hospital not send me back to gp for follow up? Why is the maternity care split between hospital and gp, but the infant care divided between pnh and gp plus hospital? I don't think the pnh has added any value, to be honest, apart from coming to the house just after birth as i couldn't drive. But the gp does the vaccines, and the 3 and 6 week check, why not all the other checks?

I find this all very annoying, confusing and messy....or are we just unlucky out west? I'd love to do a proper process analysis to this place and streamline the lot...;-p

FWIW the hospital usually send a discharge letter with details about the admission etc to the GP.

I'm no expert in the field but I think the way that each hospital, GP surgery, community clinic, etc is a seperate entity with its own patient admin systems has a lot to do with it.

Crappy facilities are supposed to be improved by 2018 - but it all depends on the politics. If FG brand it as their project and FF get back in, FF won't touch it. Or they will scrap the FG plan and start again to make it their own.

it's not up to you but with the system as you described it that would be more efficient.
A lot of people would object to computerised charts, especially ones shared through the Internet. Then there's the cost too. But I agree, I don't see why we don't all have one e-chart, we all have PPS identifiers that could be our chart numbers and a lot of people share personal stuff like banking securely online. Not to mention the personal stuff people share loudly on public transport etc!

Start lobbying your local politicians and minister for health then!
