Anybody use these anymore ??? I was trying to catch lambs today and wondered, what is the ideal crook ??? What types are out there and are they good ??? I'd guess a useful tool to have that would save the back !!!

wouldn't be without one particularly at lambing ,
never liked commercial ones so I make my own with a ewe horn or deer antler

Yep I still use one. A commercial one.not great for lambs admititely but great for ewes. I just remembered I left it out in the field yesterday. Better get it Tomo before the grass grows up around it.

Yes . Great for lambs . A 3 day old lamb can make a right fool of you without one

Use one all the time, used to have a grey coloured metal type one that was class broke it couple of years ago still can't find the same anywhere. Have two aluminum ones at the mo, be lost without them during lambing.

Yes I think i had the same one. It was smaller and better suited to lambs.. broke it too. It was a strange metal. but lighter than the commercial one i have now.

I was thinking exactly the same thing at the weekend.
We have a commercial one and it's not great for lambs but it can slow them up enough. We have one made with a sheeps horn and it's better. You will suffer trying to catch lambs even in a shed without one. Even ewes can be hard caught without one.

Got my first crook yesterday. Excellent thing to have. Huge difference in catching a lamb with one as opposed to without one. an old boy nearby makes them. Has the rams horn from a hill sheep and all. Anything that makes sheep farming easier !!!!

Often find with my crook, a little twist when it's around lamb will knock/pin him, easier catch. Also, sometimes, when crook around lamb drop the crook when/if lamb is a little off balance/unsure. Have to strike while iron is hot, they don't give second chances.

Am I wrong in saying most of the crooks made with horn are decorative and the all wood ones are for full on shepherding?

Made one for catching little lambs a few weeks ago. There is a picture in the "Guntering" thread. Will have a go at a bigger one for ewes.
