    What year? Any other damage?

To give you an idea what it might cost, last one we had to get done cost £400 for an 8v head. New stems, valves and a skim/pressure test. Head set was an extra £100, bolts another £50, as well as an expensive belt kit! :(

thanks for the replies lads, its a 200 1,1 8 valve, however before the calls to scrap it start coming here is my reasons for seeking to get it repaired

1.it has been in the family since 2002

2.it has never once given trouble (until now)

3.it is in mint condition this issue aside

4.there is only 33,000 miles on it

    5. it has had a lady owner (x 2) since new

there is an engine on stand by should it be required, however,as it stands it only appears to be the head that is damaged.

that's the ballpark figure i'm also getting, how old was your polo at the time OP?i'm hoping worst case scenario a new head, they are bent but i don't know how many of them.its only an 8 valve engine.

well what was the cause of them getting bent ??

this was just last year for a 00 polo bag of **** car ha mine was from previous owner putting on spark leads in the wrong order and trying to start the car :/

The belt just snapped, according to renault's own specifications the belt should be changed at 60k or every 6 years but due to there being barely half that mileage on it,it was never changed since new,so it perished due to old age,i'm due to find out tiday how much it will cost to get fixed but with such small mileage its worth it

The cheaper option of a replacement engine..... I'd be more inclined to repair the head or source another one provided the pistons are ok. You know the engine rather than another one with an unknown past.

Just don't leave the belt so long this time!

My above post was about a 2.8 diesel btw hence why it was expensive

Oh this is a valuable lesson learned!!!as yet i have no update on the pistions but if they are ok i'd prefer to stick a new head on it as its an engine i know as you say with very small mileage!diesels always seem to attract large repair bills but i never owned one,was yours a top end rebuild???or complete replacement

Assuming you have the head off OP, ring an engineering shop and ask them what it will cost to do the work. They can quote per valve so if you how many need doing that that'll help predict the cost more accurately.

If you haven't had the head off yet but plan to do so yourself then a brief word of warning: those Clios (AFAIK) have a wet cylinder liner. So exercise caution when separating the head from the block and that you don't disturb the liners. Again, and provided I'm not mistaken, the head should be twisted sideways rather than lifted straight up.

Are you doing the work yourself or are you just giving to a mechanic?

I snapped the belt on my 1.4 astra a few years ago. I bent 12 of the 16 valves on it. I got the head rebuilt in Corcorans engine remanufacture in Castlebar who charged €300.
The rebuild included skimming the head, 12 new seated valves and valve guides and re seated the 4 unbent valves.

The timing belt kit was another €100 euro including water pump. So it cost me €400 plus whatever time I spent on it.

I imagine a head re build for that would be considerably cheaper than what it cost me due to the number of valves. If it was me I would repair rather than replace. You know exactly what you're dealing with then. If you replace the engine, you don't know what that engine has been through before where with this one you know exactly what you have!!

Corcorans regularly do business if you wanted to go down that route. They have a guy on the road all the time who picked the block up from Galway and delivered it back also just so you know!

have to get a garage to do it,i told them to keep the bill down as much as possible.the fact it only has 8 valves could see me escape lightly when it comes to repairs compared to a 12/16/20/24 valve engine,it was old age rather than mileage that caused it to break

It was a top end rebuild as those heads are fairly hard to source. I have pics of it in a timing belt thread on the main forum if I remember later I'll link it

clios need belt changed every 4 years,no wonder yours went at 6 years its very common and usually get away with head overhaul.
