I always had thick hair. Every hairdressed commented on it and people in the salon, now its become some sort of super thick mane.

I didn't change anything or do anything different, its below my bra strap and becoming a bit of a pain :(

Hair changes as we age. When I was a child I had fine, poker straight hair. Then it grew into ridiculous curls, and seemed very thick. It started to straighten of it's own accord and now I have mostly fine straight hair with a small cowlick.

Your friend might have changed elements of her diet, her shampoo, anything. Lots of stuff can plump up the hair shaft and make hair look thicker.

From the sounds of your hair history I think we may have been separated at birth!:D

+1 I don't think anything can radically alter the thickness of your hair except for extensions.

Unless there were extenuating circumstances, this is probably it.

My mother's hair grew out so luscious and even thicker after she lost all her hair due to chemo. It sometimes happens due to serious hormonal changes such as pregnancy.

Vitamins, special hair products, etc. may help one's hair, but not to an extent that it changes your natural hair texture and/or thickness. So yes, your friend most probably got hair extensions.
