Second monitors no longer been recognised

I have had this problem now for a couple of weeks. I very occasionally use second monitors with my laptop, but suddenely it stopped working.

The problem is that the second screen is not been detected by the laptop when I go into the screen resolution options an additional monitor does not appear when I attempt to detect monitors.

I am connecting the monitor to my computer (Asus k56c, windows 8.1 32) using a HDMI slot.

I have already eliminated the possibility that it is a problem on the HDMI or the monitor, because I have two monitors and two HDMI cables and have the same problem with both.

I am using Intel Graphics HD 4000 graphic card. I have both installed the latest driver and I have also uninstalled it and reinstalled it but also to no avail.

What could be wrong, or what would you advise me to do?
