Hi all, have many years ago built myself a pretty good rig(many many years ago) But have limited myself to upgrading components over the last few years to keep a xps710 running pretty well, till now. Mobo died on me so I think its time I bit the bullet and built a new machine thats gonna see megood for another few years. So I'm looking for suggestions for a intel i7 build, decent graphics performance, I have a few harddrives including an intel ssd. Any suggestions welcome for case, power supply, cooler, ram, graphics card, mobo. Have checked out http://www.hardwareversand.de but the range is a little daunting, obviously cheaper is better, but I have to I'll spend the extra.
    Thanks

If you're not going to overclock, grab an Intel Xeon E3-1230v3, it's an i7 without the integrated graphics which you probably won't use anyway. RAM's grand. Pick up a better case though, the 200R is cheap and dirty (okay for some, but there's better cases for the same money). Look for cases from Cooler Master, Zalman, NZXT or just a different one from Corsair. Remember, better the better the air optimisation the better the temps the better the performance. Get a B85 board, like asrock b85 pro4 or MSI B85-G43 (or its gaming brother). The 212 EVO is one of the best air coolers around for now. I personally recommend an RM series power supplies from Corsair, they're the beasts of silence, the fan in my rig only starts to spin when I stress test it. Get like 550W, you won't need more. Optical drive like any other optical drive, go for it. The GPU is okay, but I'd rather get like MSI GTX 770, better performance, if you can afford to spend ~60 quid more on it.
Windows 8 is about 100ish quid now, take that into account.

Btw, Amazon.co.uk has really decent pricing and free shipping on most of the components.

First of all use Geizhals.de discount site associated with hardwareversand.de

You will get the Gpu 10 euro cheaper .

And using Geizhals.de, for 60 euro you will get the upgraded corsair carbide 300r.

Although nothing wrong with the 200r.

    Intel Core i7-4770K Box, LGA1150276,37 €
    8GB-Kit G.Skill RipJaws-X PC3-12800U CL9 61,47 €
    MSI N770-2GD5/OC, 2GB DDR5 259,90 €
Corsair Carbide Series 300R, ATX, ohne Netzteil 63,73
    MSI B85-G43 Gaming, ATX, Sockel 1150 84,84
    Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - Intel/AMD 30,67 €
    Corsair CX Series Modular CX600M, 600W 61,65 €
    TP-Link TL-WN951N, 300Mbps PCI-Adapter 20,51 €
    Akasa AK-ICR-07 Interner 6-Port Card Reader mit USB 3.0, 8,89cm (3,5") 13,21 €

    Grand total €872,35

I have shaved a bit here and there using Geizhals.de, added a couple of bits, card reader, how does this look? Hope I can find my window7 disk though, as an os is gonna add a fair bit. Thanks for the advice, its a little daunting otherwise.

Also what are going to my main sticking points when putting this together, as I said in first post, the last machine I built was along time ago. Thanks

4770K and a board that doesn't handle overclocking particularly well? What a waste of money. Get the Xeon (about 200 quid, no integrated graphics) or 4770 (about 250, locked multiplier) and pick up a nicer power supply like Corsair RM550W, it's a semi-passive PSU, trust me, you'll love it. It's fully modular, really quiet and delivers nice and clean power. It's also 80+ Gold and costs just about 15 euro more than the CX.
I'd also rather get a PCI-E WiFi card, but since the board has the old PCI's then it's grand I guess.
Also, you won't have a much use of the USB 3.0 port in the card reader, your motherboard only has one USB3.0 header, that will be taken up by the front panel of your case.

Point taken, card reader was a last minute addon. Couldn't find the Corsair RM550W, will have another look. Could go with the 4770 alright, Thanks for the advice

That german site goes by the recommended wattage for certain cards, for GTX 770 it's 650W I think, but in real life it uses about 230 at full stress. Adding all the other bits like the CPU etc, you still won't go further than 400W... You shouldn't anyway, it's safe to have some overhead though, but a 650W is surely not needed, 550W will do just fine.

Corsair Carbide 300 is out of stock as is Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO any suggestions? 550 in the basket.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 87 ✭✭estilen

Are you sure you want to have a use of the integrated graphics in the 4770? Xeon E3-1230 v3 is basically the same chip with no graphics inside of it, but sure, you won't need it, because you will have a GTX 770.
All the nice Noctua coolers are out of stock too... Idk, I can't remember any better ones, try to look for the 212 on Amazon.
As for the case, I recommend Corsair Vengeance C70, lots of room, lots of cable management space, lots of airflow. It costs about €100 but it's well worth it. Of course, there's plenty of better and cheaper ones, look for brands like NZXT, Corsair, Cooler Master, Xigmatek, Bitfenix, Fractal Design.

Any final suggestions on motherboard and GPU? Was going forthe 550 power supply but pricewent up so a €2 difference for the 650 sounded like better bet

I want to pull trigger on this one, but before I do any final thoughts?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,767 ✭✭✭SterlingArcher

    Why so much on psu?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 233 ✭✭Wasted

90€ for power supply too much?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,767 ✭✭✭SterlingArcher

It really is. 60 tops for a 600w PSU.

If You are not going to sli and you certainly are not overclocking. Really no need for a 90 euro PSU gold or not.

Corsair 600w modular PSU. Hell a be quiet 700w silver is only 80.

You don't need the cooler if your not going to overclock

    Stock cooler enough?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,767 ✭✭✭SterlingArcher

It is recommended to get an aftermarket cooler. Coolmaster hyper evo 30 euro ish, will do you.

But it is not essential would only be if you are overclocking which you aren't.. if your budget tight, you can leave till you have more funds.
