Effective immediately we are retiring our ALIZE bike name and replacing it with NAZARÉ. This is just a name change – your beloved bike will remain exactly the same.

This change comes at the behest of a well known bike company. According to their lawyers the ALIZE name was too close to one of their trademarked bike names and, as such, we need to stop using it.

Does that mean that I can now re-brand my Allez as Alize without fear of legal ramifications from the makers of the Nazare?

"In the end, after months of arguing with lawyers, we were forced to change the name to avoid a protracted and potentially costly legal battle. We prefer to focus on designing great bikes than communicating with lawyers..."

Some Tw@ts are behind the Sp. brand...

The names aren't the same. Twits.

They havent a clue how to handle pr, do they? They keep digging these holes to bury themselves in.

They are some fookwits. If I owned an allez I would cut it up into small pieces or sell it off very cheaply instead of having to hang my head in shame at having to ride one

I have one, I seriously considered your advice, it was 50/50, but to think I will just keep using it as a bike. It says it wasn't involved.

I'm going to get mine resprayed. I'm taking suggestions for anti-specialized branding.

How about changing it to Nazare and emailing a pic to Spesh

I think Café Roubaix branding would look nice.

Me a few friends are starting a new bike company called Specialised. Brochures printed, website ready to launch, bike designs finalised, manufacturing company in China all ready to go. Nothing can go wrong now.

    I noticed this on www.cyclingnews.com:

An ad on the top of the page. Solidarity with the little guy? At a price obviously!

While I can't disgree that Specialized aren't making many friends with their enforcement of Trade Mark rights (especially given the debacle and loss of face with the Cafe Roubaix guy), in this case, I can't believe that Pryde were silly enough to use the name ALIZE without considering that it it stood a high chance of infringing the Allez trade mark.

How? It is the name of a wind. Allez means go.

I think "Alizé" is a French word, but perhaps sometimes the accent is dropped in writing (or bike naming, apparently).

The pronunciation of Alizé and Allez is not similar at all.

It's like naming a bike the Muddy Fox Rapist and being sued for infringement of the trademark Giant Rapid.

What's the issue exactly? Am I missing something? They made a mistake, are changing the name, I don't get what the reaction is all about?

Specialized have a history of making themselves look like complete arseholes by throwing their legal weight around for no good reason.

What "mistake" do you think Neil Pryde made?

They didn't make a mistake. They named a bike Alize and a big knob-head in Specialized took exception to it and the small guy couldn't afford the legal costs of fighting with this big spoiled brat of a company.

Ah sorry, I misread the OP. I thought Specialized were saying that they were being sued.

What about TA Alize chainrings? They've been around a lot longer than the Specialized and are still on sale and being used by many an Irish youth cyclist.
