My sister's Acer laptop broke down, and the repair guy says the motherboard is goosed and better buy a new one.

Is it as clear as that? The repair would actually cost less than a new one, he said €200. She has asked me what I think and I'm clueless so hoping for some advice here.

    Thanks

It depends on the spec of the laptop she has now if it is just a basic laptop entry level. I would just buy a new laptop and sell the old one for parts which you should easy get at least €50 pending on how old it is and what the spec of the still useable parts are. So that is €250 that could be put to a new laptop rather then Just fixing the old one.

If you can get the full model number would be able to tell you for sure if you should fix it or not.

Ps a laptop that is a few years old in working condition might not even be worth €200 if sold eg i have a laptop im planing on putting up for sale but i know ill probably only end up getting about €150 for it

Depends on how old the laptop is really, and the specs (RAM, CPU etc).

Ok just had a look at the model and i know what broke on the laptop the GPU is fried are you getting no display or is it all fuzzy ?

There was a problem with the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS chips in all laptops any laptop i had with one of them chips in it died at some stage.

They were a good laptop for the time but i would not spend that sort of money on it.

To be honest, you'd probably be as well buying a new machine, if the motherboard is fried. Laptops are quite cheap these days and the specs on that arent fantastic by any means.

Turn it on and all the colours of the rainbow flicker for a bit, then a completely black screen.

Are the NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS chips also vunerable?

Sister has around 400 quid for a replacement. I'm on the case and was looking at this used one:

    Worth a bid?
