Got attic converted a few months back and now this gap is appearing along the stairs, is this a normal settling crack? I have tried to attach pic, hope it comes out ok. The person who did it has done alot of them in my area and have never heard of any issues with his work. Any advice appreciated.

Invite the structural eng who certified the conversion was built to building regs back for comment.

I just want to get some opinions from others before getting it looked at. My hubby thinks its fine and just settling crack but hes no expert!

Did a structural engineer sign off the work though ? If he did he should have no problem with you giving him a ring or sending on the pics.

If you didn't get an engineer to sign off on the work then that's a whole other issue entirely.

if you are getting cracks in your ceiling underneath that section of stairs, it could be slight movement in your staircase, otherwise your pic shows poor plastering, it should have scrim tape applied over the plasterboard before the plaster is applied

Maybe the photo makes it look worse but I would be concerned about that extent of cracking along the string of staircase only fitted a few months ago.As previously advised get the engineer out to have a look at it so that you can be sure it wont get any worse

you can check a lot without a structural engineer, like
is your stairs moving when you jump in the corner? it shouldnt budge.

It looks like bad plastering more than anything else . The joint where the slab meets the stairs should have been filled and scrimmed before skimming and it would have much less of a chance of cracking . It looks like it just got a quick lick of skim and the joint was left hollow behind and thats why its falling away now .
Its a spot that would be prone to cracking anyhow due to the bit movement in the stairs and its usually finished with a timber bead covering that joint
