Are you sure the distributor is at fault ? What are the symptoms ?

There's a big used parts place behind Cadburys in Coolock, Summerhill Spares. I've always found them helpful and well stocked.

Replacing should be easy enough. Take photos and mark the HT leads as you remove them. You might need to do the ignition timing afterwards too.

    Thanks for the reply Zener.

Symptoms - first start losing power and cutting out when idle at traffic lights. Now is losing power and cutting out while driving it is okay once it gets going.

It feels like the engine is not been fed properly.

A mechanic has advised that it is the distributor but will not be able to find the time to locate a distributor and fit it as he is too busy at the moment but can fit middle of next week.

I was going to try and do the job myself if it's not too difficult.

There are plenty way more knowledgable than me here but there are many things that could cause that problem in my experience. Did the mechanic say it was the complete dizzy or just the rotor or the cap ?

Dampness in the cap would cause poor starting, once it's warmed up it could run fine for the rest of the day. The next morning when everything is cold and damp again the cycle repeats. A bad HT lead might cause a car to be difficult to start when cold but once warm it might seem ok albeit one cylinder down.

If it were my car I'd be checking for a spark during the NO START. Unplug a lead from one go the plugs and connect it to an old spark plug. Lay the plug on the head on some bare metal but do not hold it in your bare hand. Turn the car over and have someone check if they can see the exposed plug sparking. See this video.

    Good luck !
