Broadband for an Old Age Pensioner...

In the Guardian recently, someone asked "What's the simplest way to get a really non-technical person online?".   The thought behind the question was a relative, living on their own with no computer and with no technical know-how, missing out on all of those Skype chats, missing out on seeing the grand children growing up, etc.

The answer was a) figure out the easiest solution for their broadband and b) buy them a tablet that you can remote control using TeamViewer or similar software.

My mum is the OAP living alone and I live overseas.  She has an iPad with a 3G SIM card but mobile reception is poor to bad so email works sometimes and Skype only ever gets to the "I can't hear you - you picture has frozen" stage. She has a telephone line but I think she left Telecom a couple of years ago. l don't know the name of her current telephone company.

The easiest answer to broadband is when the relative's next-door neighbour has wifi they are willing to share.  But when that's not available, what's the next cheapest alternative?  So, what cheap broadband is suitable for an OAP?  What cheap broadband is there? I live overseas so I don't know the market in Ireland.  Can anyone suggest something?

    Hi bungeecork
This is a link to our broadband price plans. You mentioned that your mother had had a line previously, do you know what this was? We can certainly arrange to have someone who understands the situation give her a call if you want?
