Hi. NCT in the morning. The seat belt works fine but looks like this. Will the car fail because of it?

    See attached image!

Tuck at €50 note in it and wink at the tester and tell him to check the belt clip. Sorted.

It could fail. It's damaged quite badly.

They're easy to take off. Switch it with a non damaged one if you've access to another car. 17 mm spanner.

Will take you about 10 minutes and save you €28.

If it does fail it should be classed as visual, you go off and get it replaced. Drive back, they come out to look at it and off you go. No retest fee.

    It won't save you €28

    Because visual re-inspections are free.

Just cut it off with a bolt cutters, if he can't find it he can't fail you on it. Job done.

Would that work with a whole car?

and you want to play with someones life with that,if you were in an accident and it opened how would you feel with that?
replace it or face what lies ahead.

Throw the keys at the tester and tell him it's somewhere in the car-park before running off :P

As a thought experiment, let's say we said "yes it will fail" - what did you plan to do about it before the test?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,380 ✭✭✭O.A.P

I have passed 7 D.O.E s with the same problem on the passenger side, maybe it don't have to look nice it just needs to work,

accidental release is how i look at it and playing with someones life is ok ?,nct and D.O.E.s rules at times are laughable.what comebacks if in accident and insurance involved.

they pass tyres with deep cracks on sidewalls whereas we say they are about to part company.

No need to be hysterical for god's sake.

It just looks like the casing fell off, the clipping mechanism is inside the case and if that's undamaged then it should still work as the OP claims it does.

Sure get it fixed if they tell you do, but if it's not a danger/risk then there's no need.

check your vertical headlight alignment OP. They failed me on that 2 weeks ago and I thought the lights were fine.

Failed, but only on a visual. Nothing to do with the seat belt. Just need a new tyre.

That made me smile - Last week I had a DOE was worried about a near the mark tyre. Went to a tyre dealer to check it:

    Me "Is this legal?"
    Tyre guy "Sure"
Me "So it'll pass a test"
Tyre guy sucks teeth "A test?"

Anyway it failed on side light bulb - back for a visual.

Yeah it looks like its just the cover thats massing, not really a safety issue.

I now want to know what sort of car it is and how the cover got broken. Intriguing.
