2003 Passat battery too small

Hi all. Don't know if this is out of the ordinary but wanted to run it by you all just to be sure.

The battery on my passat was after dying so went to the motor factors and got a replacement. Same spec, bosch brand but is the size of a regular battery (about 11 inches) whereas the one I took out is about an inch longer.

My problem is that the clamp is now an inch further away so won't hold the battery in place. I've secured the battery with a small piece of wood to keep it in place. Is this normal? Or is there an adapter or clamp that can secure it properly? I'd appreciate the advice.

Also - never had so much trouble taking out a battery. Vw were on a mission when putting it underneath the windscreen!

You didn't specify here if the car is a petrol or diesel,

There are a number of batteries for 03 passats.

There are numbers you should be looking for.

First is the battery code. It's a three digit number like 019 069 etc. this is the easiest way to get the right battery.

Other than that you need 2 other numbers. Most important. The ah number and the cca.

If the battery you've put in has less ah the battery is likely to be over charged by the alternator and burned out prematurely. Less cca and it will not start as easy.

    Hope that helps

Thanks for the reply. The car is a 130bhp tdi.

The motor factor said the spec matched the spec of my car. I'll go out and have a look at it later.

    What should it be?

I'll post it up in the morning when I get into the shop.

Thanks Davie. The new battery is a bosch s4008. 680a 74ah 12v. Would this do the job?

    Thanks again for your help.

Will the car pass an nct if the bat is not properly secured ?

the car wont overcharge any battery. But if you do lots of short runs, a lower capacity battery will die much quicker.

Nct fail if battery loose, so get out your woodworking tools...

    Or get the correct battery.

My manufacturer (Yuasa)recommends two battery numbers for the passat,

    069 650ccp and 75ah
    027 550ccp and 60ah

I recently put a 5069 into my passat.

If the battery is loose in the car then it is an nct fail however a piece of wood to secure it in place is acceptable.

    Best of luck

He'll need more than luck... A battery held in with a piece of wood will not pass the Nct. He has been given the wrong battery by the muppet in the auto factors. They tried giving me a passat battery for my fathers diesel octavia saying ah shur they're all the same. I went to someone else who could read the book and give me the correct battery.

Went back to the motor factors today and mentioned it. Turns out I got a battery that would fit into the same era Audi A4 TDI however won't fit the Passat. They were able to secure a correct-dimension battery for me and were very obliging.

I didn't want to risk an NCT fail so am glad that's sorted. Thanks for your help lads.

Dunno where you get your info from but I never heard of an 069 being recommended for a Passat TDI (poles are wrong way round, and it wud be too high also). 027 wud never be listed either, too square in shape..
Its always either 096 or 110 for these cars.
096 usually does it, but as in the case of OP sometimes you need the longer version (110) to allow correct clamp fitting. Not the easiest battery to fit surely, esp if you do have to use the 110, it's awkward to say the least!!

Back breaking. A terrible place to put such a big battery.

When removing battery from said Passat, and if you don't want to crack windscreen drip tray... There is a clip holding the full windscreen length tray underneath and onto bulk-head, if you unclip it you will get an extra inch or so off clearance, still an awkward job but that clip when released takes a 'little' pressure off plastic(easily cracked)tray.

not sure how to post an image here but your right about the 096 my sausage fingers...

I get my information from 2 lookups used by most factors and from a website from the manufacturer used to do lookups and battery spec for anything up to a 500 ton earth mover, but everyone gets it wrong sometimes as above.
