Windows XP Pro - no sound after clean install...

    This is a DELL laptop.

Should I be installing drivers for sound separately? I would have thought that there would be a sound driver on the Windows XP DVD.

Or is there some way of turning on the sound.

The volume is up and not muted.

    Thanks.

    D.

Go into Device Manager (Right click on My Computer, select Manage, Device Manager in the left panel) and see if you have any items with a yellow mark beside them. If you do, right click on them and select Update Driver.

    Joe,

There are no yellow question marks next to Sound, Video and Game Controllers in Device Manager.

There are only marks next to Other Devices and they are listed as; Base System Device, Base System Device, Base System Device, Ethernet Controller, PCI Device and SM Bus Controller. Are any of these connected with sound?

On the DELL Drivers and Utilities DVD that comes with the laptop, there are two Audio drivers, neither of which has a check mark next to it, meaning it's not recommended to be installed.

Maybe I should install one of them anyway?

    Thanks.

You need to get drivers for anything listed under Other Devices, as these are connected devices that the OS cant categorise because there's no drivers installed. It looks as if you are missing various chipset drivers so yep, that could well be affecting your system sound. Update all your drivers and see how you get on - you mentioned your machine is a Dell, so have a look on the bottom, and you should find a service tag somewhere. Enter this into the website here, and you should be able to download the drivers for your system.
