Paraben and sulfate free skincare and makeup products

Does anyone use paraben and sulfate free cosmetics and can ye recommend some products? I'm sick to death of my super sensitive skin breaking out and when my awful dandruff suddenly cleared up after a switch to a sulfate free shampoo, I began to suspect that doing the same with skincare products might help. I'm looking for things like shower gel, body lotion, facial cleanser and moisturiser, foundation and eye makeup etc. I've seen a few brands in my local health store but the prices are so astronomical that I'd be afraid to buy them in case they're crap.

Hiya I've been trying a few brands out.

Naked bodycare do shower gels, lotions and hair stuff available in boots. Everything but their shampoo is great and good price.
Also in boots sanctuary spa have some sulfate and paraben free stuff - but it's not everything so read the ingredients. Their moisturiser and exfoliate in the blue packaging is amazing but pricey. Their mum and baby purple packaged things are both sls and paraben free. Burt's bees are good for everything but shampoo but a bit pricier.
In terms of facial skin care stuff the lavera range is great and fairly priced. A little goes a long way with all their stuff. They have a cream and gel cleanser that are both lovely and good at makeup removal. I've recently got their moisturiser for all skin types and it's working out great. I'd have dry and oily skin.
Other than that, the body shop have a new rane that includes a cleansing balm I've not tried yet but looks lovely.
Natures best shampoo is good from health stores also and the dr organics range is good for shampoo conditioner cleanser but not sure about their face creams.
Sorry if that's a muddle hope it helps somewhat!

REN, Ziaja sensitive line, dermalogica, Moogoo just a few ranges off the top of my head

Going sulfate free is great for dry hair and/or scalp as sulfates are very drying ingredients, which may cause dandruff in some cases. But it is kind of ridiculous that these 2 ingredients are marked as evil. Every skin is different and everybody has different tolerance to different ingredients. If I didn't have very dry hair and a sensitive scalp, I wouldn't bother using an SLS free shampoo. It is not toxic or anything, just drying. And SLS free shampoos are better for coloured hair as they lather less (less colour loss per wash) and coloured hair generally tends to be drier. No other grand reason behind it.

Same with parabens: It is just another ingredient marked as evil through fear mongering. I have quite sensitive skin which is also dry and very acne prone. And I have no problems with any parabens. It is more about finding out what ingredients your skin is sensitive to.

Those are really good brands. I'm a big fan of REN. I can't really use Dermalogica but that is my sensitive skin. It has many fans.

Besides these you can look into La Roche Posay, Avene, Trilogy, Payot, Indeed, First Aid Beauty.

You don't even have to spend so much money for good skin care. Simple has great products. Cetaphil cleanser is the only cleanser I can tolerate when my skin becomes over reactive. It is a great basic cleanser for every skin type (it won't remove make up though). Silcocks base can be used as a make up remover. It works great for me but mineral oil (which a base ingredient for it) does not agree for all skin types. It does not trigger my acne but I know it does for many people. Natural does not necessarily mean better. Lots of essential oils aggravate my skin and trigger my acne. But it does good for many others' skin.

Like I said it is about getting to know which ingredients work for you. A €2 moisturiser probably does not have great ingredients (but great if you have non-reactive skin and that works for you) but you don't have to spend €70 on a face cream either.

Try IRish brand, Elave - can be gotten in most chemist. here is the website http://www.elaveskincare.com/

Evil might be overstating it a little. Sls is an ingredient that's added to most household products to make suds because people believe that suds make things clean. It serves no other purpose but it can have a negative effect on some peoples skin. More significantly it has a hugely negative impact on the environment, water particularly, for obvious reasons. La Roche posay, avene, simple etc are not sulfate or paraben free and even if they're marketed towards sensitive skin, don't have ingredients (or lack ingredients) to back up those claims. As for parabens, they're used as preservatives mainly and there's no significant evidence to suggest they're harmful. However they can be replaced without affecting the products so what's the harm in encouraging companies to use alternatives?

*avene is sls and paraben free but aveeno is not!

I really like the Jason range for haircare, body care & I think they do face care too!! I stopped using comercial shampoos & conditioners around a year ago & it's made a HUGE difference to my scalp, plus it's organic! ! Before that I was using head & shoulders as anything else would give me awful dandruff... also try an apple cidre vinegar rinse... it helped mine a lot!

I use Dr. BRONNER for body & hand (liquid) soap, also body cream...again totally natural & organic... They both seem expensive but a little goes a long long way... I 'cut' my dr. Bronner soaps with water, around a third (distilled) water to 2/3 soap. You can put it in pump dispensers & the smells are to die for!!! Especially the almond & lavendar :)

It's called 'miracle' soap & they claim the are 18 uses for it including washing dishes & clothes!!
I use the mint one for brushing my teeth & the dentist recently told me my teeth & gums were perfect... nearly fell off his seat when I told him I was using organic soap lol the taste dies take a bit of getting used to but it seems to have cured my extremely painful sensitive teeth issue too!!

I haven't tried using it as hair wash though I know you can as my hair is very dry & frizzy-prone!

Wish I could say the same for my face. .. Just recently had to go back to using chemical neutrogena products as going all natural for a few years just gave me tonnes of blackheads, pores & red veins :((

    Hi,

I am also on the search for skin & hair friendly cosmetics and this is what I found:

    For hair:

Hask shampoo & conditioner available in Penneys. No parabens and no sulfates.

My natural hair colour became more intense and strangely enough my grey hair is not as prominent. As the shampoo has no sulfates, it does not strip off the colour.

    For skin:

To remove make up I use raw, unrefined organic coconut oil. Amazing and natural. You can get it in any health store. I also use it as body moisturizer.

I use pure rose water as facial toner. The best quality one can be found in any Asian or Arabic stores. It is the purest one with no added preservatives that can be found in products bought in pharmacies.

    Creams & serums:

My recent discovery. An Irish brand from Co. Galway called Kinvara. My gosh their cream and face serum..I noticed results within 2 days..It was followed by a few compliments from my friends:).

    Make-up:

Dr. Hauschka translucent loose powder. No talc content which is important.

Trying to get Lili Lolo lipsticks as they are lead free but my order is on its way so can't say much about it.

Above is the result of my research for good quality products. What started me off was the moment I looked into ingredients of a very high end powder I purchased last year.

All of us pay for substandard products with big names and bad bad ingredients.

I love Ren skincare, their products are so gentle and my skin feels so soft since I started using them.

I know it's not free from sulfates and parabens, but Avene has a great reputation for soothing irritated/sensitive skin. I use a lot of La Roche-Posay products and find them great as well.

How you find the Hask brand from Penny's? Saw these before but didtn think they would be SLS, Parben free!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10 HannahL

Yes they are free of all these. Check their website http://haskbeauty.com/

I used to use the Body Shop products with no parabens and sulfates but they are nowhere near the Hask shampoo & conditioner. The Body Shop btw has many many products that claim to be ''closer to nature''. Sometimes it's worth to look at the ingredients to see what ''gems'' are hidden inside..

So true about the body shop. It's only particular lines that are free from sulfates, parabens etc.

Thanks for this, talc drives my skin crazy and makes my eyes red raw, I've never ever found a powder that I didn't react to :)

Unfortunately, I'm one of the few that reacts to Avene :( That's why I suspect I'm sensitive to parabens or sls, I have tried so many brands for super sensitive skin and none of them have ever agreed with me. I might give Ren a go, everyone who uses it has good things to say :)

It's not cheap, I'll admit. You'll pay €20+ for most of the products. But my skin has improved drastically since I started using the Clearcalm3 range so, for me, it's worth it. The products do last well though, to be fair.

I order from Cloud10.com; they have a good range of Ren products and the delivery is very quick, and usually free if you spend over €15.

Oh that's a shame! Maybe try Ren and see how you get on with it? Their products are very gentle.

I'm definitely going to try out the Ren cleanser and moisturiser (and maybe even treat myself to a bottle of shower gel and body lotion too :D )

Has anyone tried Benecos cosmetics? There's a shop local to me that sells their products and they seem reasonably priced :) Some of their stuff contains talc though so I'm kinda wary.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,601 ✭✭✭kandr10

Ooh let us know how the ren stuff works out. Just remembered there's a really good makeup brand called fuscia that might be worth a look. They're Irish and have a shop in swords and also sell in some salons.

Went on a shopping spree in my local Alchemist Earth shop and bought the Ren Evercalm cleansing gel and day cream. I also picked up some Faith In Nature shampoo and conditioner and some Lavera body wash and lotion :D The Ren cleanser was €20 and the day cream was €32, which I don't consider too expensive as the cleanser is a really decent sized bottle (150ml) and the day cream (50ml) is so light it spreads fabulously and you literally only need a tiny amount. My skin is in a fairly bad way at the moment so I can't say whether or not it's working yet but I'll let ya know in a few days how I'm getting on with it :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,391 ✭✭✭fro9etb8j5qsl2

Unfortunately, I am underwhelmed with the Ren products I bought :( I am disappointed because I was really hoping that they would live up to expectation. I haven't had an allergic breakout (thank god :) )however, I find the cleanser very drying and about 2 hours after using and then applying the moisturiser, I am left with flaky patches across my cheeks :( I find that I need to apply the moisturiser 3-4 times a day to maintain the moisture and because of this, over half of the €35 bottle is already gone in only 3 weeks. It's a pity because the cleanser made my face feel really clean. Back to the drawing board I suppose!

I've heard good things about the Moo Goo range of products. They do shampoo and conditioner too, as far as I know. I tried their skin balm and found it very good.

If you look online you'll find a list of suppliers. I bought mine online but then I found the range in a local pharmacy.

The chemist around the corner from me sells Moogoo so I might just go in and ask if they have any samples. Is the range expensive Pumpkinseeds?

Is 14.95 each for 500ml shampoo/conditoner, which isn't cheap, but they're large bottles and if it helps it's worth it. Their website gives a breakdown of each product, what's in it and what's not as well as local stockists and the prices and sizes available.

Just to update in case anyone's still interested, the 'yes to' range is now in boots and on offer at the minute. Around €5 for moisturiser and €3 for cleanser. They've a whole range of other creams, exfoliaters etc. worth a punt!

The yes to cucumbers is for sensitive skin I believe. No idea how long it's on for. It was 1/3 off seemed separate to other offers running in boots at the moment. Maybe an introductory offer? Check their website maybe
