I just bought a new laptop here in Portugal, does anyone know how to change the language / windows settings. I have tried to select English in the time date settings , it still defaults to portugeuse on boot up , and obviously its difficult to understand the settings , language pack link would be good

    thanks

You need to open Control Panel>Language Settings. Choose Add a Language then English and then there is a link to download the language pack there. Make sure you move the English tile to the top so it will be the default language after you log off

Sorry for digging up an old thread but it makes more sense.
I bought a windows 8 pc from germany two years ago and after a bit of google translate sessions i was able to get it all in english. But windows 8.1 has undone all this. I think the option to download the english / irish pack is not there. What to do?

Take a look here. It's an expected outcome for some reason that after the upgrade language choices are not retained. Bit weird but hopefully that sorts it

As weird as it sounds, you can also go into a language setting in Windows 8.1, and then "add (another) input method". e.g. add german to English (ireland), etc. and remove either also, etc.
