Horse it out. We went with 50 units urea this week, 1 bag out in March. Need to have >100 out soon

Would i need to get first round out before i do second round. No fertilizer spread or cows out within at least 2 mile radius of me here. And after rain yesterday it will be a few more days at best.

10:10:20 on the grazing ground three weeks ago. 2 bags. Not much to show for it by way of grass because most days coldish.
Just starting to make progress these last few days though.
Was thinking about putting on a bag of CAN tomorrow, to sort of help it along and be ready for the second round of grazing. Probably start grazing next week with bull and few cows / calves!

    Would that make sense?

    That's a lot of N.
Will you have enough of your allowance left to last till autumn?

Urea come in the same granular form as 18.6.12? Could I put it all on together? Don't have the machinery so will be paying a neighbour to do it.

Yep but you'd spread the 18 6 12 first then follow up a few days later with urea.

Would it be OK to fire out some gran lime before the fert. Land has just got slurry last week.

Hey Newbie think your not heavily stocked with a need for big silage yields? 3 bags 18-6-12 per acre grew 10 bales per acre for me last year. Wouldn't bother with anymore as paying contractor by the bale.

    Hi Ablur,

Ya I only keep a few weanlings and take a cut of silage of 80% of ground. I sell most of the silage of the field by the bale and keep some and sell over the winter.

Thought the extra fert may produce a better crop and enable me to cut sooner and get faster regrowth.

The fert is costly so now sure how many extra bales it would produce and if it's worth it.

    What you think?

Am at much the same myself. Not a fan or urea, I'm on heavy land in West Clare so wont get a chance to get urea out when it works best ie spring. Also adding the extra N from urea on top of 18-6-12 now will mean you have to cut later so that the N is worked through the grass. I costed making round bales here last summer as close to €20 when contractor costs, fertilisers and lime included. Selling them for €22 with a lot of haggling! Going to up the number of cattle and hopefully reduce the bales as a result this summer and see where it goes.

Thanks, in the same boat, have had lads pay from €11 to €14 for bales in the field. They pay contractor costs. Think thats not bad but always hanging on and lads not sure whether they will take it or not until near cutting it. Also some lads keep you waiting for payment. Would be robbed if I had to keep it all myself.

Sell the stuff I keep for €20 to €25 during winter. Hope to do a bit of reseeding and improve grass quality but as you said if I keep a few more stock and could make €200 a head on them and cut down fert bill might be more profitable.
